Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Montgomery.
Hi Heather, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started blogging over 12 years ago when I was training for my first half marathon. I thought I had to follow through with it if I “put it out there” that I was training and running. I did and then kept signing up for races, sharing my training and results, clothing, shoes, and other products that helped me. One day a brand reached out and wanted to pay me to talk about their products on my blog. I didn’t know this was even a thing, so I was super intrigued and started doing a deep dive into working with brands. Remember, back then. There were no courses or information on how to do this, so everything was trial and error. Once social media became popular, I kept my blog but switched over to posting more there. I rebranded to a more lifestyle-focused blog to write about other passions (travel, parenting, and fitness) after I got pregnant with my daughter, Emma Kate (now 7), and things just grew from there. Now Through Heather’s Looking Glass represents my blog and socials like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. I have even self-published a book and created two online guides about working in social media management, growing as an influencer, and working with brands. I am passionate about learning and growing since this influencer space always evolves!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
There have been many challenges. Especially in the beginning when there was no roadmap to how any of this works. I have had my website crash, lost tons of photos and had to rewrite pieces, been turned down for opportunities more times than I can count, dealt with plagiarism, and had my fair share of unkind comments and messages from internet trolls. You must have thick skin if you are going to put yourself out there as I have. But, the good outweighs the bad, and I have had so much fun speaking at blogging conferences, meeting followers, making some of my best friends online, and getting to travel to many places and work with amazing brands. It’s also fun to work the business with my husband, Bobby. He is super business savvy, helps with that side of things, and is a great Instagram husband!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In addition to having my brand, Through Heather’s Looking Glass, I also work remotely for an influencer marketing agency, where I work on “the other side” of things. I source and vet influencers, write contracts, negotiate with managers and creators, and help manage relationships. It’s been enjoyable because, as a creator, I have a unique insight that has helped me in my work. The company I work for is great and has encouraged me to keep up my personal brand and work, which I know many companies do not do. I am so thankful for their support.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting?
So much! I have created a blog post and free email series about how to start a blog because I get asked a lot about it, and I want to help people as much as possible to avoid the mistakes I made when I started out. If I had to narrow it down, I would say consistency is huge. Too many people try to become a creator and then give up before things have a chance to get going. It took a long time to build up enough followers and gain their trust to start working with brands. Don’t give up! Also, I know it sounds cliche, but be yourself. People can sniff out an imposter or if you aren’t being genuine. When you start working with brands, don’t accept everything that comes your way. You aren’t meant to be “for everyone,” so don’t try to be, or you will speak to no one. Do what makes sense for you and your brand!
