Today we’d like to introduce you to Ericka Carreon Mejia.
Hi Ericka, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I was born in Texas and raised in Chihuahua, Mexico. We are a family own and operated business. The mission is to serve and improve places; we love what we do, and making our customers happy is the best part of doing this. When I was little, I saw my family had their own little business, and I used to help them, so I learned how to work and make deals and sells early. While other kids were playing, I worked and improved my sell skills; we were poor but not as poor as other families in my hometown. During each of the 15 years, we came live in the USA, where I could go to school and work for banks for almost 10 years, where training was strong and great to become a better customer services representative and salesperson. And doing conferences up to 6 times per week in English and Spanish for Wells Fargo Bank, where we educate and promote the services. I worked in 3 branches that increased their numbers in loans, investments, and accounts due to those conferences where I used to put my heart into educating the employees of different companies. When you show people you care about them, they like & trust me, so they follow me to the branches I used to work.
But that was not enough money for my family and me, so my husband Gabriel and I decided to start our own business where the opportunity was in San Antonio, TX first. We move here to Knoxville because we have the rest of the family here, and this is an excellent place to raise kids and do business too.
So, we put together all the talents & skills we have to open AMERICAN CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN SOLUTIONS in Knoxville to serve in this area. We are a fusion of construction and art services; due to my husband Gabriel’s expertise and my father Manuel Carreon, uncle & our Partner Leonardo Romero we can offer all these services. We are a small team making big and great things! And we love what we do and promote the Hispanic community with many good things to offer and make places better, more colorful, and happier with our Art. Also, to give hope to everyone, especially in these challenging times due covid economy, war, etc.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Since there is a Hispanic Team company, the main issue we have is that many customers don’t even want to talk to us just because we are Latinos or Hispanic. They don’t even allow us to give them a free estimate and review their project to let them know how we can help them. So racism is our number 1 issue.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
We can create any idea our customer has to personalize their space into an amazing & unique one! We love to transform ugly places into pretty ones. So we specialize in Hardscapes & Landscapes Art, our number one service at the moment, where we can do a whole new yard or upgrade or decorate areas like patios and outdoor and art designs on pools, residential and commercial indoors too. Our second is our personalized Murals, drawings, or letter designs. We also do Metal, wood, recycled, and other materials sculptures are different materials.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Yes, we are a risk-takers team! Risk number one for us is to open a business when you start from zero, with many loans and people not trusting you. We receive a lot of NOs, but we still need to knock on more doors. We are very focused and motivated to make our business grow, leave legally to our kids, and make ourselves self-proud of improving this community of Knoxville with our services and art. We believe in ourselves and know we are here to enhance and give jobs and opportunities to those who follow us and believe in us.
