Daily Inspiration: Meet Domonica Bryan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Domonica Bryan

Hi Domonica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As I sit with 16-year career in child welfare, I am reminded of the countless lives I’ve touched, the struggles I’ve witnessed, and the impact that legislation has had on our communities. Growing up in a working-class family, I’ve always been driven by a sense of responsibility to serve others. My parents, both blue-collar industrial workers, instilled in me the value of hard work and the importance of giving back to the community. As a first-generation college graduate, I was determined to make a difference.

My journey in child welfare began with a passion to protect and support vulnerable children and families. I started as a social worker, working with families who were struggling to cope with the challenges of poverty, addiction, and domestic violence. Over the years, I’ve seen the best and worst of humanity, and I’ve come to realize that the key to creating positive change lies in the intersection of policy and practice.

One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced is the lack of legislation that supports working-class families. As a society, we often focus on the needs of the most vulnerable, but we forget that the working class is the backbone of our communities. I’ve seen families who are barely scraping by, working multiple jobs just to make ends meet, and yet, they are still expected to provide for their children without adequate support. The lack of affordable childcare, healthcare, and education has a devastating impact on these families, leading to increased stress, poverty, and even child removal.

On the other hand, I’ve seen the transformative power of legislation that prioritizes the needs of working-class families. Programs like the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit have made a significant difference in the lives of families I’ve worked with. These policies have provided a safety net, allowing families to access basic necessities like food, shelter, and healthcare.

However, even with these successes, I’ve noticed a disturbing trend – the erosion of trust between government and the people. It seems that, in recent years, government has become more focused on serving special interests rather than the needs of the community. As a social worker, I’ve seen firsthand the devastating impact of policy decisions that prioritize profits over people.

As I look back on my 16 years in child welfare, I am reminded of the importance of government working for the people. It’s not just about passing laws; it’s about creating a system that is responsive to the needs of our communities. We need leaders who are willing to listen, to engage, and to prioritize the well-being of all citizens, not just the privileged few.

As I approach the end of my campaign, I am filled with a sense of hope and determination. I know that the work is far from over, and that the challenges we face are complex and multifaceted. But I also know that, together, we can create a better future for our children, our families, and our communities. That is why Ive decided to run for office.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As I reflect on my journey to run for public office, I am struck by the sheer magnitude of the mental, physical, and emotional toll it has taken on me. The demands of a full-time job, coupled with the added responsibilities of juggling family and marriage, have been overwhelming at times. However, it is the mental aspect that has proven to be the most challenging. The constant barrage of opposition, criticism, and skepticism has taken a significant toll on my mental well-being. The fact that some individuals seem to genuinely believe that my opponent is better equipped to hold public office, and that I don’t stand a chance of winning, is particularly bothersome. The constant pressure to prove myself, to overcome the doubts and fears of others, has been exhausting. Despite my best efforts to stay focused and motivated, the weight of these challenges has left me feeling drained and demoralized at times. As I continue on this journey, I am reminded of the importance of self-care, resilience, and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a dedicated professional with the Department of Children Services, I have had the privilege of dedicating a significant portion of my career to investigating severe abuse cases. This challenging yet rewarding work has allowed me to develop a unique understanding of the complexities surrounding child welfare and the devastating impact of abuse on young lives. Despite the emotional toll that this work can take, I have found that the experience and skills gained from working with the Department have been invaluable. Through my work, I have had the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable children and families, and I am proud to have played a role in ensuring their safety and well-being.

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to WIN the 2024 State Senate Campaign, and get right to work for the people of Knoxville.
