Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Fox.
Hi Amanda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Thank you! Hi, I’m Amanda!
I am a copywriter and freelance writer with a background in psychology, the music festival industry, songwriting, outreach, and event planning. I love writing and reading, and I write for all types of outlets from advertising to music journalism. I am also in the beginning stages of writing a book!
I became pregnant at the age of 24, got married a few months later, moved from Atlanta to Knoxville (where I knew no one) when my daughter was 1 month old, and I felt like my world had fallen in on itself. I stayed home with our daughter so my husband could support us and pursue his dreams; it was a very lonely time for me.
Once my daughter was three, I felt confident enough to put energy into my own career. I was connected with the owner of Sweetwater 420 Fest, told her about my interest in the music industry, and she offered me a position working for her. I went on to do artist relations and hospitality for festivals like TomorrowWorld, Imagine Music Festival, Shaky Knees, Sweetwater 420 Fest, and Music Midtown.
After working in the industry for a few years, my husband and I decided to have another baby. After a difficult miscarriage, our beautiful son was born. I stayed home with our children for a few more years until they were both of school age. At that point, I realized I would rather create music, not coordinate it. I began taking guitar lessons, practicing songwriting, and started a band that played around town, and at local music festivals.
Soon after my band formed, my husband and I went through a divorce. I returned to the workforce as an Event Coordinator and Outreach Director. Working in that position allowed me to see my capabilities, and realized that I had the potential to become a leader for my own business.
Writing was always something I had wanted to pursue, but fear held me back. I came to terms with the fact that the only thing between myself and my dream of becoming a full-time writer was…me. So, I quit my job and began my copywriting and freelance writing business. I took courses in copywriting and marketing, interned at a small marketing firm, created my website, business cards, logo, reached out to local writers, and used my music industry skills to interview and write about other people in the music industry.
I now write copy for multiple clients, I have become a staff writer for our local Knoxville Music Journal, and my writing has been featured on the front page of the living section in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
I am excited to take on new clients for anything from website copy and blog writing to advertisements, proofreading, and more. I am thrilled to have found a niche that feeds my soul, and I plan to pursue it for the rest of my life.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Raising children as a single mother while starting my own business has had its struggles, but they have been worth it, and the journey is full of life energy that I would not trade. I am grateful for a supportive family, friends, boyfriend, and therapist!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Raising children as a single mother while attempting to “co-parent” with my abuser has been a struggle. Even after our divorce, he continued to abuse and harass me; it was clear he didn’t want me to succeed.
Figuring out how to parent on my own, support myself and my children while starting a new job isn’t pie. But, when you love your children and your career, you figure out how to make it work. With the support of friends and family, groups like Women in Entrepreneurship, and an incredible therapist, I have planted my roots deep, and feel more sturdy than ever.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a quick learner and I am curious, which allows me to accommodate the needs of my clients. My love for learning has equipped me with the ability to understand topics from business to psychology.
I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in religious studies. I worked in real estate briefly, marketing, festival coordinating, and event planning. I have been an investor for a brewery, a songwriter, a networking specialist, and a mother. I play piano, guitar, and I am a singer. I enjoy sports and am currently into golf and tennis. I have seen grief after the death of my mom when I was fourteen. I survived an abusive relationship. I have traveled around the world. I am grateful for a father who has taught me grit and resilience, and I plan to use my voice as a writer to do the same for others.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I expect to see most marketing companies and individual businesses hiring out freelance copywriters as opposed to having them on salary.
