Conversations with Victoria Phillips

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Phillips.

Hi Victoria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been creative, even as a child. I would act out scenes from movies in the living room, paint rocks, and draw on the walls. I was into fashion and began sewing in middle school. In high school, I designed and made my prom dress as well as other garments. Art became an outlet to express my thoughts and emotions.

Later, I received my B.A. in Visual Art with an emphasis in Studio Art from Lee University. I then went on to earn my M.F.A. in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design. I also earned my teaching certification and gifted endorsement in Art Education from Piedmont College.

I currently live in Atlanta, GA. I am a full time Art Educator in Fulton County, GA. I am a part-time Assistant Professor of Art at Kennesaw State University and I have a very active studio practice. My studio is at Mutiny Artwrx in Atlanta. I am also the founder and owner of Victoria Phillips Studio and Gallery.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been smooth or easy. I worked very hard to get where I am. I had multiple jobs in college, then worked full time as a teacher while earning my M.F.A. all while maintaining a studio practice. Being a female artist is difficult in general because women artists are historically underrepresented.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Although my M.F.A. is in Painting, I consider myself more of a multidisciplinary artist as I can do many things and enjoy them.

My current work is nonrepresentational abstract art. I am really proud to have been in multiple international exhibitions, including both in Greece and Monaco. I think what sets me apart is my drive to go for my dreams. I am continuously pushing forward and working hard towards my professional goals and I think it shows in my work and in my engagement within the art community.

I also know the importance of serving my purpose and not allowing my circumstances or position to interfere with my purpose.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
There are so many people in my life that deserve credit for their support and encouragement. My husband, of course, and my family. I also had some incredible teachers in high school who truly poured into my life, which gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams. I’ve had countless professors and mentors who have helped guide me towards becoming an artist as well.
