Community Highlights: Meet Dr. Tommy Lane, Pt, Dpt of Physio Lab – Oak Ridge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Tommy Lane, Pt, Dpt

Hi Dr. Tommy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I developed my passion for physical therapy after sustaining and rehabbing from injuries from playing rugby for many years. Some of the most arduous injuries I came back from occurred while I was the president of the UTK rugby team and finishing out my degree in kinesiology. I was able to work with physical therapists here in town who were able to give me my life back in a way. This sparked a desire to follow this career and be able to help out other active individuals who are held back by pain or disability. I went on to South College where I obtained my doctorate in physical therapy. Afterwards, I quickly began working in the sports medicine field, helping athletes return to sport as soon as possible and as safely as possible.
I had been in contact with Adam Levko of Physio Lab on and off throughout this time, entertaining the idea of joining the team. It wasn’t until about 2 years into practicing that the timing just seemed right and I pulled the trigger to join the team. That was about 2 months ago at this point, during which time I have been working to setup and build the Physio Lab – Oak Ridge location out of Secret City Crossfit! We are just getting started and I am extremely exited to help serve the community here in Oak Ridge!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has certainly not been easy. I went through PT school during the covid lockdowns which was extremely challenging mentally. Then the first jobs I worked out of school were all unnecessarily challenging due to employers pushing unethical or unreasonable expectations trying to squeeze out every penny possible from patients. This has all served as a great learning opportunity though, and I now have a much better picture of what I truly want out of a career and what the best way to serve people is.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Physio Lab is a leading group of physical therapists in the Knoxville area who specialize in sports specific rehabilitation. I myself specialize in working with runners and fitness athletes but have worked with athletes from dozens of sports as well. We are an intentionally out-of-network company so that we are not dictated by insurance companies about what we can or cannot do to help our patient get back to what what they want to do. Many other physical therapy clinics will see clients 2-3 times per week, often booked the same time as other patients, all while still paying a copay upwards of $180 each time. We see patients on average once per week while spending the whole 60 minutes with our client. Our treatment is not dictated or influenced by insurance companies, and we have better outcomes for our patients in a shorter timeframe with less total out-of-pocket spending. It is a win-win for every single one of our patients.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I am an East Tennessee native and have been serving the local community for years now. I am so happy and excited to be able to give back to this community one day at a time. I am looking forward to helping more runners, lifters, and athletes of all shapes and sizes in Oak Ridge! I am located inside of Secret City Crossfit at the end of Melton Lake Drive! Feel free to text or call me at 865-719-8508 to schedule an initial evaluation!
