Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Zahir.
Hi Alex, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I will utilize straightforward language to succinctly narrate my lifelong story.
First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude for this chance to connect with those who will read my narrative. I also wish to thank them for taking the time to engage with my story, which is commonly referred to as the “Sheep to Home Décor” narrative. I will elaborate on this when the opportunity presents itself, as I import high-quality, durable, and potentially antique handmade rugs from Afghanistan, where the tradition of rug weaving continues to flourish among the villagers, particularly in these challenging times, as their looms are often portable.
In a sense, I represent the third generation engaged in the rug and weaving trade and or business industry. A significant amount has changed since my grandfather began collecting and trading rugs and weavings in the villages of Central Asia, selling and exchanging them at various Caravanserais along the Silk Road. https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2015/mar/31/registan-samarkand-square-history-cities-buildings
The idea of marketing the products of Afghan Turkmen individuals residing in various refugee camps in Pakistan was not new to me. However, I needed to conduct market research to ascertain if there was a demand for the products I could offer and how to approach it, what modifications were necessary, and whether those changes in the products could be accommodated in refugee camp environments. Nevertheless, I persevered in my endeavors. The most effective method for me to grasp the trends, the potential for significant business, and opportunities for expansion was to stay close to the primary wholesale marketplace. For me, that was New York City.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it was a smooth road at all.
Translating a spoken “voice” language is, in reality, a challenging task. In my situation, I was attempting to weave it for millions of individuals, akin to performing music for the eyes.
Without the aid of Google or a GPS navigation system, it was difficult for someone unfamiliar like me to locate a place. Additionally, making free calls via WhatsApp and other platforms presented further challenges.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I have faith in luck.
My parents fled communism in the early 1900s and established their lives in Afghanistan; I could have met a tragic fate like many others during the war.
That being said, one must also exercise due diligence.
