Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Horn.
Hi Laura, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started when I was about 7 or 8. I had gotten a cheap digital camera for my birthday, it was pink of course! I was taking pictures of everything! When I saw my papaw watching some hummingbirds I knew I just had to get a picture of one. So, I hid behind a porch beam and snapped a picture. Now my papaw was a very rough working man and he didn’t fawn over things easily. When I showed him the picture he sat me down and said it was wonderful. He went on and on about how it’s hard to find something you love and are good at.
He told me to keep taking pictures, and if it truly made me happy to never give up on it. I haven’t put down a camera since. In college, I saved all my money and bought a DSLR camera. I started doing sessions for everyone I could find. However, college students are pretty broke. Most people turned me down because they couldn’t pay me. I thought that was ridiculous! Everyone should be able to have memories and moments captured, regardless of their financial situation. That’s when L. C. Photography was born!
So EVERY person has an opportunity to relive moments through photos.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Photography is a pretty over-saturated market. A lot of people see that I offer “pay what you can” sessions and assume it’s because my photos aren’t very good. We have been very blessed, and my photography isn’t our main source of income so it’s not about the money for me. I love what I do, and I love sharing that with my clients. When my husband and I started out we didn’t have the money for a wedding photographer. We had to rely on family members to capture our day.
While we are so grateful for their effort (and the pictures they got for us), we will never have those magical pictures that perfectly captured the start of our lives together. My goal is to make sure no one feels that way! Whether it’s your wedding, graduation, or the birth of your baby, I want my clients to be able to be in the moment without worrying about how they are going to pay for it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
One of my proudest moments was when I received my first “top shot” award while working with Shutterfly. Oddly enough, another of my proudest moments was when I left the company. I have quite a few health issues and it came down to putting myself first. I put all my trust in God and left the job I had dreamed about. In doing this I was able to focus on myself and re-devote my photography to its true purpose.
I’m now able to be at home with my son, help on our family farm, and be more available for my clients! While I don’t really specialize in anything my favorite sessions to do are my “capturing lives” sessions. These feature elderly loved ones, sometimes with their family sometimes without. I love seeing their eyes light up when they see their pictures and think back on their life up to this moment.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
When doing sessions I do accept tips if a client wants to pay more than we decided. However, that is never expected! I enjoy doing totally free sessions just as much as any other! The main way to support me is through word of mouth. With so many photographers available personal recommendations make all the difference.
You can also support me on social media sites. Liking and sharing help get my name out there, which helps me find more clients that I can collaborate with!
