Today we’d like to introduce you to Karyssa Hartsell.
Karyssa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Karyssa Hartsell. I am a Licensed Master of Social Worker (LMSW) in Tennessee. I obtained my Master of Social Work from the College of Social Work at the University of Tennessee. I also hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Spelman College. I have been in the mental health field for over 5 years and have experience working with adolescents, families, and adults from various backgrounds.
I am very skilled in the recovery-based treatment and trauma-informed care. I have experience utilizing several treatment modalities including CBT, DBT, and Motivational Interviewing. I am the founder of Uplifting and Promoting Positivity. This organization’s sole purpose is to help promote self-love and confidence for women. As a black woman in the mental health field, I understand that intersectionality can impact one’s overall well-being.
Social categorizations influence our experiences in the world. It is important that we are aware of our realities in order to heal and change our narratives. I am very passionate about uplifting women and instilling self-assurance from within. I am here to help those who are ready to learn and develop the proper tools for growth and self-fulfillment.
I have just published my first workbook, Journey to Love: a woman’s guide to healing and discovering self-love.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I struggled with direction. I understood my vision and the overall objective of my work but lacked grasping the concept of which method would achieve this goal. For years, I kind of just put my work on the backburner.
The fear of the unknown and fear of failing clouded my mind for so long. I eventually had a moment of clarity, where I was free from the outside world impacting my judgment and at peace. I’ve learned that I perform my best when I am at peace.
Actually experiencing peace has definitely helped me to become a better version of myself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Licensed Master of Social Worker (LMSW) in Tennessee. I currently work as a Program Director and Primary therapist for a treatment recovery center in Knoxville, TN.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I use to write songs when I was younger. In another life, I would be a DJ/ producer!
