Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Good.
Hi Alex, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My cookie journey began back in 2011 while a student at Penn State. I needed to learn a new skill for a class project and decided to ask my neighbor, Sharon, to teach me the art of royal icing cookies after admiring her cookies at neighborhood get-togethers.
I’ve always had an artistic background, so I loved that this could be a creative outlet I could explore to celebrate special events for my family and friends. I graduated from Penn State in 2014 with a degree in Elementary Education and taught second grade in both Virginia and Pennsylvania. While teaching, I continued to make sugar cookies for friends and family and began working at a local bakery as I continued to improve my craft.
My husband and I moved to Knoxville in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic and as crazy as it sounds, it felt like the perfect time to take a leap of faith and start my company.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a new business during a pandemic was not easy.
My husband and I didn’t know anyone in Knoxville before our move, so I relied on social media to jumpstart my business. The start was challenging because I didn’t have an established customer base yet to rely upon for orders and to attend the markets and craft fairs I was participating in.
In addition to starting a brand new business, I had to also teach myself the ins and outs of running a business, like paying taxes and understanding Tennessee’s food cottage laws. My background in elementary education did not prepare me for the logistical part of running a business!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love creating custom-decorated cookies for events and parties around Knoxville. When ordering, customers typically share their party theme and give me creative freedom to create a cookie set that matches their party. In addition to custom cookies, I also host cookie class parties privately and at local small businesses around Knoxville.
I prepare everything for the class and teach the guests how to decorate cookies from start to finish.
What are your plans for the future?
I would love to make cookie classes the main part of my business. Being able to teach others while also sharing my love of cookie decorating is the best of both worlds.
