Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Boyd.
Hi Andrew, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was a sales representative for five years at two of the larger, more popular roofing companies in Knoxville, TN. Over time I grew tired of receiving the same response by potential clients, “you’re WAY higher than the last guy”. We were double, sometimes even triple the price. I was very aware the prices were a result of incredibly high OVERHEAD expenses. Office space, marketing, and ridiculous salaries drove the expenses so high customers were paying a premium. I then decided to start Overhead Roofing. My goal was to minimize the expenses associated with running a roofing company, while still offering A+ quality and workmanship. I have done so by wearing many hats; I am the owner, the marketing, the sales representative, the production manager and every other position necessary to run a roofing company. I have a wonderful office at home and storage space for extra materials. This allows me to be unbelievably competitive with pricing so much so that I am less than half of my previous employers. The best part is I am offering the SAME exact roofing system and utilize the same materials and labor. I take being “legit” very serious in an industry that has its horror stories. That said, I am licensed, bonded, insured and even offer financing. It’s funny, I like to think of myself as my former employers worst nightmare and a true man of the people, which really brings me great joy. I firmly believe the industry needs to be exposed and this is one way I can do that. I had my first child November 29th and sleep well knowing the work I’m doing now for my fellow neighbors will one day make him proud.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not, as expected there have been many. I took the gamble of a lifetime when I had to quit my job due to a “conflict of interest”. It took months of preparing for my grand opening. In the meantime I worked at Walmart part time running groceries to cars in order to afford the cost of starting a company and the insurance on a monthly basis. That experience humbled me tremendously and allowed me to focus my efforts on Overhead Roofing. Other struggles included learning to design a website, acquiring the proper credentials, and essentially teaching myself how to form a compliant company. All of this while expecting my first child forged me into a better man.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Overhead offers roof and gutter replacements/repairs as well as gutter protection. I’m GAF certified which is an incredible accolade as a roofer and primarily offer the GAF lifetime shingle roofing system. I’m most proud of my ability to save people thousands of dollars while knowing they are getting outstanding value. The only thing that sets Overhead apart from the highest rated “BIG DOGS” is my price and customer service.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I have such fond memories of being the son of an Air Force officer and moving every three years. From Idaho to Italy, I grew up in many different places and got to see the world at a young age.
