Community Highlights: Meet Rachelle Crockett of Rae’s Massage Harmony

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachelle Crockett.

Hi Rachelle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I aways wanted a career that helped people in some way. After receiving a massage while on a missions trip in the Dominican in my late teens, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I went to massage school in Colorado in 2011. When I moved back to Tennessee, I worked in Nashville with Marriott for a few years as a trainer and massage lead until we decided to move to Knoxville to get out of the city and back to the mountains I love so much. From the Rockies to the Smokies. I worked at Blackberry Farm and Mountain for a couples years after moving here. Though it was privilege to be able to have worked at such high end places for so long, it didn’t give me a lot of room/time to be able to do the work with clients that I really wanted to do. I wanted to help in peoples wellness journey and see their progress. So in 2021, I decided to completely jump out on my own, open Rae’s Massage Harmony, and start networking, which eventually led me to my wonderful studio here in West Knoxville.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The beginning of my massage therapy journey wasn’t the easiest. Very soon after returning to Tennessee from Colorado in 2013, I got injured when a truck ran a stop sign and totaled my car. I had torn ligaments and a partial hip dislocation which took about a year of therapy to be able to walk without pain. I obviously wasn’t able to practice massage for over a year. So I actually decided to attend a second massage program in Nashville to get refreshed while I healed. To be honest, having to personally work with a PT for so long probably helped me to understand body mechanics better than anything else, and really helped shape the work I do now.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Rae’s Massage Harmony?
I mostly do therapeutic work with a little “spa” on the side. I work with a lot of people that are in recovery from injuries and athletes to help with athletic performance/injury prevention. I use a lot of movement in my technique to help reach or relax the muscles causing an issue. For those that need a little more pressure and stretch, with their permission, I use Ashiatsu where I utilize my feet to deliver more pressure with broader strokes than I could with hands alone. The clients wellness journey is my priority, so I’m not against referring out either. I network often and there are some incredible therapists in this area, that specialize in so many different techniques. If I see that someone on my table would benefit from another therapy I don’t offer, I’ll help to refer them where possible.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Massage therapy in licensed under the health board, so I hope that at some point most insurances cover massage therapy for injury recovery. That would be amazing!
