Today we’d like to introduce you to Mateo Ilic.
Hi Mateo, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up, both of my parents did hair for a living and being in the industry was the last thing I wanted to do. Got into quite a bit of trouble until early adult years until I had gotten sober at 22. Was sick and tired of not having much going for me, so decided to go to barber school as a last ditch effort to get myself on track. Turns out I love cutting hair. It’s been nearly a decade doing it now.
A friend and I who build old 60’s 70’s motorcycles together had the idea of opening up our own barbershop . But with both of our passions in mind, bikes, good people, quality haircuts, and genuine experiences. So that’s how Strange Magic Barbershop came about
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’ve had tremendous support from the community and feel very humbled to have started the business out of a 17’ trailer and have now grown into our 2000sq ft brick and mortar store. It’s been happening quicker than we thought, but we couldn’t be more grateful for it
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
If I’m honest, I’m one of those people that thinks no one is more special than the other. We’re all just doing the best we can. At the end of the day, if you’re looking for a barber that’ll cut good in a timely manner and at a reasonable price, you’ve found your guy. As will any of our barbers at the shop. The most important principle we have is “treat people good and work hard.” It’s really that simple.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?

We hope to have a full shop and thinking of new ways to keep ourselves busy.
