Community Highlights: Meet Katrise Thompson of Beauty from Ashes Coaching, Counseling, and Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrise Thompson.

Hi Katrise, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My path to becoming a therapist began while volunteering at a domestic violence shelter. That experience changed the course of my life—I knew I wanted to help provide hope and support to survivors, especially because I grew up in a home impacted by domestic violence and learned firsthand that healing is possible.

As I entered the field, I quickly noticed how few therapists looked like me. Although I had been in therapy myself, I had never once sat across from a provider who identified as a person of color. That lack of representation stayed with me and ultimately guided me toward private practice. I knew my community needed more access to therapists of color, and specifically Black women, who could offer culturally informed support and understanding.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d say the road has been very purposeful. Every position I’ve held has given me experiences that support my growth as a therapist, a coach, and a private practice owner. With each step, I’ve learned more about myself—what serves me, what doesn’t, and how I want to show up in this work.

Like most therapists, I began wanting to help everyone, but I’ve learned that it’s simply not possible. Some of my most interesting encounters with clients and colleagues have taught me that knowing your limits is just as important as knowing your strengths. Those moments have shaped me both professionally and personally, and they’ve guided me toward working in ways that are sustainable, aligned, and truly effective.

We’ve been impressed with Beauty from Ashes Coaching, Counseling, and Consulting, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m a therapist, coach, and consultant, and my work centers on helping people improve their overall well-being. In my practice, I offer individual and couples therapy, faith-based life coaching, and consulting services. As a therapist, I draw from several evidence-based modalities—including CBT, DBT, and solution-focused approaches—to support clients in reaching their goals. I frequently work with anxiety, depression, personality disorders, and substance use, all with the intention of empowering individuals to live their best and most authentic lives.

My coaching program, I Am Enough, is a faith-based program designed to help clients strengthen their relationship with themselves through a spiritual lens. It allows people to reconnect with their purpose and identity using principles rooted in faith.

No matter the approach I’m using, my style is direct and supportive. I create an environment where clients know they are seen and accepted without judgment. I want people to walk into my space exactly as they are and feel safe doing so.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to allow God to direct my path and to never shrink myself. I’ve come to understand, deeply, that I am enough exactly as I am. That realization has shaped how I show up in my work and in my life, and it’s a message I hope to pass on to the people I support.
