Check Out Nemesia Sorcar’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nemesia Sorcar.

Nemesia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I moved to Knoxville 3 years ago to start my Acupuncture business here in South Knoxville. I have been practicing Acupuncture for 8 years total, and decided to move to Knoxville because I wanted to live near the mountains and wanted a change of scenery from where I had been. Before moving here I lived in Asheville, NC, and before that I lived in Florida, Texas and a few other places. I have done a lot of traveling, but have always felt like the Appalachian mountains were home.
Knoxville felt like a great balance of a city and also being able to live close to nature with all of the walking trails around the area and the proximity to the Smoky mountains. I also chose to live and have my business in Knoxville because my best friend lives here and everyone I have met through her here has been very kind and friendly, Knoxville has the nicest people I have met in all the places I have lived.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business has not been a smooth road per se, its has had a lot of twists and turns and many learning curves along the way. Even though the path of entrepreneurship hasn’t necessarily been easy, it is worth the hard work and I wouldn’t change it because I have learned so much along the way. When I graduated from Acupuncture school I felt daunted by entrepreneurship and didn’t have the confidence at that time to have my own business, so I worked for other people for years. Eventually, I realized that if I really wanted the freedom to be practice Acupuncture in the way that I wanted, I would need to have my own business. I moved to Knoxville with the intention of committing to making my dream a reality of having a successful business that is centered around helping and healing people. I definitely underestimated how destabilizing it can be financially in the first few years of starting a business, there were many times where I questioned whether running a business was a good idea in those first 2 years of being a business owner. For the first 2 years living in a new place and starting a business I had a lot to learn to create a stable foundation for my business, and it seemed as through the more I learned about running a business the less I actually knew.

What helped me though some of the more challenging parts of entrepreneurship is remembering that challenges in life are inevitable, instead of praying for an easy life, pray for the strength to move through life’s difficulties with grace, and the gold nugget that comes from moving through these inevitable challenges is resilience and knowing that we can do hard things which ultimately provides more self trust. Every aspect of life is an opportunity for character development. For me, starting a business was a a huge lesson that good things take time and small acts of putting energy into your dreams over time is the way to make them into a reality. Entrepreneurship is a great way to come up against the parts of yourself that hold yourself back in life, and face those parts to continue to move forward and expand in life. Ultimately, I would say, the path of entrepreneurship has been a path of getting to know myself more deeply which has been a gift. When I shift into that perspective it helps me move through some of the obstacles that come with entrepreneurship.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an Acupuncturist and practice Classical Chinese medicine, herbal medicine, and also provide lifestyle guidance which includes food therapy from the lens of Chinese Medicine to help people on their health journey. I don’t necessarily specialize in treating any specific ailment because Chinese Medicine is so vast that it can treat a wide variety of ailments, and support people in every stage of life. Often Acupuncture is known for helping with chronic pain and infertility, which it does very well. However Acupuncture can help people in so many other ways too. For example, not many people know that Acupuncture actually affects the hormonal system and can be great for helping with the symptoms associated with menopause and perimenopause, menstrual cycle disorders, PMS, PMDD, PCOS… I have seen Acupuncture have incredible results in these areas and I don’t think that many people know that Acupuncture can do more than just alleviate low back pain. Often times, people find Acupuncture as a last resort when they have tried other modalities and are not getting the results they were hoping for. While Acupuncture can have incredible results for a variety of symptoms, it is important to note that it takes time, and it works more efficiently when people are willing to make lifestyle changes, which not everyone is willing to do. I like to work with people who are willing to make changes in their own life and want to take an active role in their healing journey. Since Acupuncture and Chinese medicine is a holistic system, it works on the physical body, the mind and the emptions, and so I also like to work with people who are dealing with physical symptoms that relate to mental or emotional patterns that they would like to change. Acupuncture is a wonderful therapy for helping people feel better and more at peace in their lives.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Yes I have taken many risks in my life, for example traveling places by myself, moving across the country to a new place where I don’t know anyone, moving to a new place and starting a business with very little money and hoping for the best. Some of these decisions were not always the easiest or most efficient path to take, but I always learned something valuable along the way. There are some ways I’m willing to take risks and other ways I am unwilling to take risks. I take risks if what I’m moving towards seems worth it, but I don’t just take risks for the sake of an adrenaline rush. I take more internal risks where I am coming up against my own internal fears, because I think that is how we grow, by facing our fears and limitations and doing the scary thing anyway, to prove to ourselves that we are capable of moving beyond our mental limits. To me, risk taking is more of a mental game of overcoming fear, and I think that one of the best ways to practice this is through doing something small on a regular basis that puts you outside of your comfort zone.
