Today we’d like to introduce you to Susie Kaplar.
Hi Susie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I had an accident falling off a large horse. Was severely injured and had to have spine fusion surgery. My surgeon suggested I take Pilates classes. Right after we moved to Northern California there were classes at a resort close to home. I started taking classes and 5 years later decided to become an instructor. After being certified as a mat instructor for a few years, I decided to continue my training with the apparatus (reformer, cadillac, chair, etc.). I was certified about 3 years after I took my apparatus training classes (covid interrupted my progress). I have been completely certified for about 4 years.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Covid was a major problem. I was renting space at another studio and we were able to open 6 weeks after the shut down. The other instructor and I never taught the same day. We were teaching privates so there would just be two of us in the studio at a time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I worked as professional staff for the LA County Sheriff’s Department for 14 years. I left to complete my Bachelors degree and with that, became an elementary school teacher. After moving to Tennessee, I substituted for Knox County School for a few years until my Pilates career took most of my time.
I have many clients that are mature (seniors) and I have also worked with those with physical problems. I am thorough and try to help my client have the correct form. I am proud to be an instructor with a great group of clients, some as long as about 5 years.
I teach “slow and controlled”. Pilates is meant to stabilize the body and you cannot stabilize the body if the core is not activated. You need to go slow to engage the core and as time goes on, you should be able to increase your range and speed.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Patience.
