Hidden Gems: Meet Tim Mueller of Cabinet Alchemy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Mueller

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey began in 2010 in Orlando, Florida. At the time, I worked a corporate job but was drawn to woodworking. I started collecting tools and building furniture using pallets from my job. Over the next nine years, my skills grew, my designs improved, and I built a client base that kept me constantly busy. By 2019, my side business was thriving, but my role as a business analyst for a software company was demanding more of my time. In November 2019, I made the leap, leaving my corporate career to focus full-time on my custom furniture business.

When the COVID-19 lockdowns hit, my business flourished. I honed my skills in spray painting, incorporating it into the custom cabinets, built-ins, and furniture I created. This led to refinishing a few kitchens, which I discovered I truly enjoyed. I began envisioning a future in cabinet refinishing.

For years, my wife and I brought our kids to vacation in Tennessee, falling in love with East Tennessee. After six years of visits, we decided to take the plunge, purchasing 12 acres in Madisonville to settle down. After some time, I conducted market research and realized there were few businesses offering the level of quality and products I provide. With a growing population and a surge in remodeling projects in the area, it felt like the right time to start Cabinet Alchemy.

One year in, the experience has been incredible, and I see even greater potential ahead.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My first year in business here in Tennessee has been incredible, though not without its challenges. Like many businesses in their first year, the biggest hurdle has been building awareness. I’ve had to think creatively with social media, using it to showcase my portfolio and highlight the unique value I bring to the table. Kitchen cabinet refinishing is a significant investment, and I always encourage clients to research their options carefully before making a decision.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I am not naturally a big risk-taker, but moving onto 12 acres of land was a significant leap for my family and me. We’ve done all the work ourselves, from setting up utilities to planning the forever home we’ll be building this year. What I’ve learned about risk is that without taking any, you can’t achieve your goals.

With Cabinet Alchemy, one of my biggest challenges was stepping outside my comfort zone to manage social media. I didn’t particularly enjoy it at first, but I realized that if I wanted my business to grow and thrive, I had to push past those feelings of dread and just go for it. Taking that risk has absolutely paid off by helping me connect with clients and showcase my work in ways I couldn’t have otherwise.

For me, risk isn’t about being reckless—it’s about being intentional, weighing your options, and having the courage to step forward when the rewards outweigh the potential setbacks. Whether it’s building a home from scratch or growing a business, I’ve learned that embracing calculated risks is often the key to moving closer to your dreams.
