But in a nutshell, I am a professional writer by trade. It’s what I went to school for (I have a B.A. in English w/ Creative Writing). My first job was at a publication while I was still in college. I got my start in the magazine industry and still have my hands in it even now as a Senior Copy Editor for the national magazine Career Mastered.
After college, I started working at a management company doing content marketing and copywriting. It’s there where I helped the company generate over $7 million dollars in revenue from 1 campaign (not counting any other marketing they were doing). When I saw that I decided to try the same strategies towards my own ideas. I became an entrepreneur and serviced small businesses with the same skills I used in corporate America. I exceeded the income I was making full time while working as an entrepreneur part time, which gave me the confidence to quit my job and go full time working for myself through my companies BlckTie Magazine and BTM Writing Services. That was in 2018 and in AL. Fast forward, I moved to Knoxville in 2019 and became a mom in 2020, then again in 2023. I no longer publish my own magazine, but I am the Senior Copy Editor for a national magazine. And with my writing firm, BTM Writing Services, I’ve also been able to help clients from all over the world, published two books, have traveled to do speaking engagements, developed partnerships, and had so many wonderful opportunities. It’s been so great. Outside of that, I’ve been getting into screenwriting and joined the Board of Heartland WIFT, a nonprofit for Women in Film and Television. I was a Dollywood Insider and contribute to Knoxville Moms as well.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Omg. I thought getting over the learning curve of start a business and get it off the ground so I could go full-time was hard, which it was, but being a working mom is actually harder.
I say that because I literally can’t be two places at once and so I have to drop the ball either with work opportunities or at home from time to time, which means I’m not able to go full speed ahead with both simultaneously. I have to pick. It’s truly a juggling act.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Wow. I’m most proud of having a billboard in Time Square for my very first book. That was such a cloud 9 moment for sure.
I’m proud of the impact I created with BlackTie Magazine from the African American perspective when I lived in Alabama and the unity in the community that was formed as a result.
I’m proud of the work I do now in general and how I’m able to use my writing skills to help so many businesses (over 150+) from all over the world from a diverse number of industries. It’s such rewarding work!
I’m also proud of the family structure I created with my husband Chris of 14 years and being able to set things up so that I am able to stay home, live my dream life with my kids and earn a living doing what I love most.
