Hidden Gems: Meet Luke Wheat of Keep Going Podcast: Athletes Shining a Light On Mental Health

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Wheat

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Keep Going Podcast is a 3 person team currently. Shout out Pat O’Malley and Dave Mitchell! It originated with an idea from my co-host Pat O’Malley. He knew athletes at all levels were struggling. We decided that athletes at every level weren’t receiving mental health support they needed and wanted to play our part. So, we decided to start the Keep Going Podcast in November 2022 as a platform for athletes to share their stories of success overcoming mental health issues while in sports or after their athletic careers ended, as has been the case for many. We got some graphic design help from Christen Torres Buell, who is an awesome lawyer in Knoxville at Torres Law Firm, and took off from there. Since November 2022 we have filmed over 80 weekly episodes and some one offs in between. We have had many great guests on. Some highlights are a Clemson Football National Champion in Richard Yeargin on our show and an American Ninja Warrior contestant Dejuan Hathaway on as well. We attribute all the success we have had to our guests. They come on our podcast and are vulnerable when they know hundreds of people will be listening to them and I am grateful for every single person that has come on to share their unique story.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Pat and I both have full time jobs apart from the podcast, so that has been the only real hurdle we have had to navigate. He does a great job at booking guests, running most our social media side of things, etc. I run our editing and production of the podcast. So, there is a yin and yang kind of mojo that Pat and I have going on. The main struggles were figuring out how this was gonna shake out when we started a couple years ago. Other than that, our guests make it easy. They tell their stories in a way that is relatable and applicable for our listeners.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Keep Going Podcast: Athletes Shining a Light On Mental Health?
I think the main goal of Keep Going is to inspire our listeners to go about their day in a positive way no matter what is going on in their lives. We have heard countless stories about how people have recovered from major injuries, mental and physical, and they come out on the other side for the better. I am proud that we provide a comfortable space for people to open up and be real on our show. We keep it very conversational and laidback which I believe our guests and listeners appreciate. What I would want most people to know is we strive to be an inspiration for people struggling. There are better days ahead, there are wins coming your way, you just have to keep going.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Good luck hit for me when I met Pat. He was the brains behind this operation and it never would have started with out him. In the grand scheme of things, we are firm believers in making your own luck. Keep going being our mantra, we believe that is a positive call to make a difference that you want to see.
