Conversations with Skylar Ball

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylar Ball.

Skylar Ball

Hi Skylar, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story with filmmaking begins my first year at the University of Tennessee in 2016. My roommate and I both found interest in it at around the same time, so our weekends (and often weeknights) consisted of taking trips to various outdoor areas around Knoxville to film whatever we could for fun. Anywhere from downtown Knoxville to the Smokies, I was filming as often as possible. Fast forward to the summer of 2017, I was offered a part-time job at a media company in Knoxville, filming everything from weddings to brand videos for local businesses. I was with that company part-time until November of 2020. At that point, I officially launched my own business and dove fully into wedding filmmaking. Since then, I have had the opportunity to participate in so many beautiful weddings around Knoxville and the occasional destination wedding.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When launching any business, there are definitely some roadblocks you have to overcome. Especially when starting a business during a global pandemic, there are fears about whether you will succeed, if people will hire you, and what your plan B is if things work out differently than expected.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in creating wedding films that reflect your story and serve as a timepiece that can be passed down through your family for generations. I recently married the love of my life in June of 2023. One of the most surprising things about my wedding weekend was how fast it came and went. You try hard to soak in all the moments you can, but time does fly by. My goal in filming weddings is to help couples and their families have a film to reflect on and remember their wedding weekend. The heartfelt speeches from families and friends, the groom’s face as his bride walks down the aisle, and all of the other moments that come and go all too quickly. My films are story-driven. So, in addition to seeing all of the moments from your wedding in video form, I also focus mainly on the toasts, ceremony, and all the other moments of audio that often mean more than a video can. By intertwining video and audio from your wedding day, the result is a film that truly takes you back to the emotions you felt on that day every time you watch it.

What matters most to you?
For me, the most important aspect of my work is the connection I establish with my clients. By taking the time to understand a couple, their unique story, and the things that matter most to them, I am able to authentically and confidently tell their story through my filmmaking. This personal connection is what sets my work apart and allows me to create films that truly reflect the essence of each couple.
