Today we’d like to introduce you to Carina Brabson.
Hi Carina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started partially due to creativity serving as an outlet. I was in a period of grief from losing both of my grandmothers a year apart from one another. After several months, I decided to make it a business because some of my peers made me feel there was no seat at the table. So I was set on building my table, speaking. That was how Nug&Carol Design was started. The name is in memory and inspired by both of my grandmothers. Nug was a self-taught artist specializing primarily in handmade crafts and oil painting. Carol was a minister and singer who traveled with an interfaith choir during my younger years, taking me along sometimes. These two women helped shape the person I am today because of their heavy influence and presence in my life. After two years, I’m far from where I want to be business-wise and still working a regular 9-5. I trust that God will lead me down the right path for me. My faith is essential; sometimes, I may have gone further if I had made compromises. At this point, anything provocative sells, but I want to be set apart as Christ has called us to be at the end of the day. I’m not perfect and do not claim to be. I’m trying my best to do my part in the kingdom of God.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been far from smooth. I have had no luck applying for grants, so I rely solely on myself or family members who have helped contribute. Not to mention, I work my regular 9-5, then come home to work and get orders out for customers all night. I have two kids and a husband who works the third shift. I’m a one-woman show, so that’s a challenge, but the show must go on at the end of the day!

Nug&Carol is a handmade business. I offer customized items, digital art, and fiber art. I’m mostly known for my personalized items and rug making. Nug&Carol Design is a haven for those who appreciate the beauty of handmade goods and desire unique, personalized touches in their home decor. Founded by my love for crafting, my business aims to bring warmth, comfort, and style into every space.

Behind every small business are countless untold stories of dedication, perseverance, and the unwavering support of loved ones. For me, God deserves the ultimate credit. I know that sounds cliche, but if you know, you know. I know he has gifted me the ability to be creative and think outside the box. After all, he is the ultimate creator to have fashioned us into his image out of dirt. I must acknowledge the divine grace of God, whose blessings have guided me every step of the way. In moments of doubt and uncertainty, his steadfast love has given me the strength to pursue my dreams and overcome obstacles. I am humbled by the realization that my small business is but a reflection of his abundant grace and mercy. Secondly deserving of recognition is my family. Their unwavering belief in me and their tireless encouragement have been my success’s cornerstone. From the late nights spent brainstorming ideas to the early mornings preparing orders, they have stood by my side, offering unwavering support. Together, God and my family have been my guiding light, illuminating the path toward realizing my entrepreneurial dreams. Their love, support, and encouragement have propelled me forward, even in the face of adversity. I thank God daily for my family because I honestly think they are the best group of people for me to be surrounded by.
