Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe Peterson.
Hi Chloe, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
As a child, I was always interested in art and art museums. When I was 12, my grandmother entered me into the Dogwood arts festival chalk walk in the historic market square. From there, I experimented with many different mediums and different sizes of work. I was especially gifted in realistic painting. However, I also have always been drawn to more significant results. Since then, I have fallen in love with color and depth and how they work together to trick the eye. Today I work as a muralist and attend school at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville as a full-time student.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey to finding myself in art has been smooth in some lights and especially rough in others. I’ve come to see that I have a natural talent for creating art and teaching myself how to create those artworks. I struggle to understand the time it takes to complete a piece and realize I may have too much on my plate. When I was younger and competing in child competitions for the first time, I had difficulty understanding why I did not place or why the audience did not like my piece. I later came to know how to complete works for an intended audience. I have also struggled to make a name for myself in the art industry because I am 18. I have had many friends along the way and patrons who have lent me their expertise. Those of which I continue to share their names with other blooming artists.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am specifically a muralist and realistic painter. I paint, chalk, and sketch natural scenes of people, places, animals, and things. I am known for being a chalk artist at the Dogwood arts walk and painting the rock on the University of Tennessee’s campus. I am most proud of the piece. I am currently working on it. This piece takes place in a patron’s home. I am also proud of my recent win of first place in the college solo artist category in the Dogwood Arts Festival Chalk Walk. Sometimes I think that my age and variety in art sets me apart, but I usually let the audience decide what they believe. I’d like to see myself as your traditional student who enjoys hobbies like everybody else.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory was the first chalk walk I ever took part in. My grandmother brought me to show me and let me experiment with the concrete. I ended up copying a piece of work from another artist online. I regret to say I didn’t give them any credit. But that first piece opened up so much space for me to grow as an artist and a person. Without my grandmother’s incentive to “give it a shot!” I would have never met any fantastic people I know and love today.
