Inspiring Conversations with Alex Zahir of AZ International

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Zahir.

Hi Alex, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started without knowing what sells and if that market is good for me or not. I thought NYC is the business center for the world. Soon I realized that the market was not for the products I would wholesale back in 1997-1998.

Moved to Sudbury Massachusetts in the year 2000 and focused on public relations, community activities, charities works and etc. In a few years, my business was successful. I sold my business in 2006 and moved to Knoxville, TN where I am today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. As a newcomer, I had to learn a lot. Living, learning, establishing a business was more than going to university.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
AZ International, LLC is my main business. We are specializing in custom design of the most exclusively made all-natural dyed hand-knotted rugs for several wholesalers in the US and Europe. We are known for quality rugs revivals. Our years of experience and established connections to find the right materials for the right customers set us apart from others.

I’m proud of the quality products that I import and sell and proud of employing 250+ families that make living from rug weaving. I want your readers to know that I’m selling rugs that are as special as pieces of art, investment, and decoration, rather than floor coverings. Furthermore, I want them to know that an sq. meter=approx. 10 sq. ft. of rug would help employ a person for 6 months.

So I put the most beautiful rugs on the American floors and food on the tables of the least privileged villagers in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Turkey. My 2nd business is real estate, buy, improve and sell. I am also partnered with 3 gentlemen to work on a State Department’s USAID jobs creation program.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was like an athletic and study-minded person interested in poetry and mathematics. Personality-wise, quiet, curious, and a shy person.
