Daily Inspiration: Meet Anna Goswick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Goswick.

Hi Anna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always valued capturing the moment. In our family, I was the child with the 35mm camera, taking pictures of my siblings, my pets, and things that moved me that I saw in nature. No other medium could do for me what photography could- capture a spontaneous moment and freeze time.

Even as a child, I cherished taking pictures of all the “big” days and mundane everyday moments of our family life, carefully collecting memories of moments I wanted to remember. I started working in a photography studio while attending college in Arizona. We shot on medium format film and developed the images in the lab on-site.

I learned a lot about lighting, angles and posing, and the value of connecting with people during their portrait session. Since it was all on film, I had to be very mindful as I was shooting and working with clients to capture all these elements together since we would have to wait to see how the images turned out after the film was developed. I really found that I loved working with families, children, and newborns. Newborn portraiture was becoming a new genre at the time, and I loved the challenge and patience required to capture our tiniest clients during such a beautiful, fleeting phase of life.

I graduated with a BS in Business and started a family. The birth of my daughter brought back so much of my desires to capture all the beautiful tiny moments in her life- All the big firsts- first smile, first tooth, first steps- as well as the more everyday moments- the day she dumped spaghetti on her head at lunch, night time snuggles before bed, bathtime. I wanted to remember everything- her first tiny black curls, the sound of her laughter, the way she held my finger so tight with her tiny hand.

Life went on my baby grew and I worked in banking and public relations. I saved up and planned and bought nicer cameras and read and learned all I could about photography. The best lenses for child photography, shooting in low light, editing, and using Photoshop and Lightroom. I studied. I practiced. I found out that I was having another baby, this time a boy- after 11 years of hoping to have more children. I saw motherhood through an even deeper lens this time, with a deeper appreciation of the struggles, the hopes, the miracles- watching the stages of your children grow, and the expanse of joy I felt in being a mother.

I was blessed with the opportunity to stay home with my children and be a full-time mom. I decided that if I felt so passionately about capturing my children’s little moments then surely other mothers did as well. I set up a small home studio and began shooting babies and first birthday cake smashes. I took families out to play in the golden sunlight to capture their snuggles, their play, and their baby’s big toothy grins. I was passionate about it and loved every moment of getting to know each family and watching their littles grow.

I started my own business in Canton, GA, just north of Atlanta, in 2014. I was recognized by Atlanta Parent Magazine as a Top Family Photographer in Atlanta in 2018 and awarded Best of Atlanta for the categories of Maternity, Newborn, and Family Photography for multiple years by Expertise.com. My work has been featured by the Nashville-based photographer organization, The Motherhood Anthology and by The Milky Way, an international resource for photographer training.

I have photographed hundreds of families, children, and babies and have over 8 years of experience as a professional photographer. Our family relocated from Canton, GA to Knoxville in the summer of 2021. I look forward to meeting and serving the beautiful families of East Tennessee.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I love to give, and I am passionate about capturing families at their best, and with personality. My only struggle has been how to balance my passions with my family life for the optimum results. I am a mother first, and I deeply value our family time.

I have had to set limits on the number of clients I can successfully balance to continue to give each family the best experience, the most meaningful moments, and the sweetest images with a quick turnaround time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in natural portraiture that captures the essence of your family. Family sessions are timeless portraiture but also have a playful side: I want to see your family’s personality emerge while we are together. That’s why my sessions are a little longer than some because I want to take the time to draw out the natural smiles, the genuine connection.

I shoot a lot of newborn babies and families, and my style in that is unique because it is neutral and natural, organic, and baby-led posing. It’s a little lifestyle because it looks so natural, but I am detailed and guide you into flatter poses and angles that capture you at your best.

Newborn sessions for me are very much family sessions because I feel that is the essence of what I want to capture- Your baby, the connection you have with your little one. and how small they are in your arms. I keep the colors, fabrics, and props very minimal because I want the focus to be on your moments and your little one.

What does success mean to you?
Success for me is being true to who I am and what I want to create. There are many trends in photography that come and go, many different beautiful styles of photography and editing. My heart is for the timeless moment- capturing the connection, freezing the time. I am also very attentive to flattering angles, lighting, and poses.
