Today we’d like to introduce you to Bradley Pompey.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Like many small businesses, our story started with seeing a need and us providing a solution.
Before starting The Fence Revivors, I worked in fence sales for another company. We sold a lot of wood fences, and customers would often ask us who they should use to stain and protect their new fence. At the time, there really were not many companies in the Knoxville area that specialized in wood staining and preservation. Most of the time, the advice was simply to call a local paint company, even though we knew that was not always the best solution for properly protecting exterior wood.
When my time with that company came to an end about seven years ago, I saw it as an opportunity to build something of my own. I wanted to create a company that focused specifically on wood care, not just making wood look good, but helping customers protect their investment and extend the life of their fences and decks.
We started small and have grown a little more each year through hard work, customer relationships, and continuing education. Early on, we attended training through Wood Defender and used their products for a period of time. Later, I discovered Stain & Seal Experts through Facebook and became involved with their training program, Staining University.
For the past four to five years, we have continued attending trainings and investing in education. That commitment to learning has helped us improve our process, better serve our customers, and continue growing year after year. Just as important, our team takes pride in taking care of each project and treating every customer’s home like it was our own.
It has been quite a journey, and we are grateful for how far we have come while staying focused on where we want to go.
Restoring Wood. Restoring Pride.
Professional Wood Care
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been challenges every year. I think that is simply part of owning and growing a small business. Our biggest struggle has been finding people who truly take pride in their work and care about the quality of the finished product as much as we do.
Over the years, I’ve learned that you can teach someone the technical side of the job, but it is much harder to teach work ethic, dependability, and pride in a job well done. As we have continued to grow, finding the right people who share those values has been one of our biggest challenges.
I’ve also had to grow personally as a business owner and leader. When you start a business, you quickly realize that being good at the work itself is only a small part of running a successful company. There have been plenty of mistakes and lessons along the way, but each year we have tried to learn from them, improve our systems, and become a better company.
The road certainly hasn’t always been smooth, but I’m grateful for the challenges because they have helped shape both me and The Fence Revivors into what we are today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At The Fence Revivors, we specialize in professional wood care. Our focus is on restoring, protecting, and extending the life of exterior wood surfaces, including fences and decks. Our services include professional wood cleaning, restoration, staining and sealing, as well as fence and deck repairs.
We believe professional wood care is about much more than simply applying stain. Every project is different, and understanding the condition of the wood, proper preparation, cleaning techniques, moisture levels, and choosing the right products and application methods all play an important role in achieving a quality, long-lasting result. Through years of hands-on experience and continued education and training, we have worked hard to become specialists in our craft.
What sets us apart is our commitment to continuing to learn and improve. We don’t pretend to know everything, and I believe that mindset has been an important part of our growth. The wood care industry continues to evolve, and we are always looking for ways to improve our knowledge, our processes, and the experience we provide our customers.
What I am most proud of is that after seven years, we are still here, still growing, and still learning. Building a business has been one of the most challenging things I have ever done. I started as someone who knew very little about running a company and have had to learn through experience, mistakes, challenges, and the guidance of others along the way.
To still be in business seven years later, serving our community, creating opportunities for others, and continuing to build something that I believe in is something I am extremely proud of. We have come a long way, but I also believe we are just getting started.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My wife and kids are what matter most to me. They are the reason I started The Fence Revivors and the reason I continue pushing forward, even through the challenges that come with owning a business.
One of the things I value most about being a business owner is the flexibility it gives me to be present for my family. Being able to attend school events, watch my kids play sports, pick them up from practices, and simply be there for the moments that matter is something I don’t take for granted.
Building a successful business is important to me, but success means more than revenue or growth. For me, it means creating a life that allows me to provide for my family while also being an active part of their lives. My wife and kids are my motivation, my purpose, and the reason behind everything I am working to build.
