Daily Inspiration: Meet Brooke Kitzhaber

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Kitzhaber

Hi Brooke, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into the world of micro-macramé began as a personal escape during the 2020 lockdowns, transforming a childhood hobby into an early career. As a child, I spent countless hours crafting friendship bracelets, a passion that reignited during the isolation of the pandemic. With time on my hands, I dove back into the comforting rhythm of knotting, which soon evolved into a fascination with micro-macramé.

Before delving full-time into micro-macramé, I was a 7th-grade math teacher, a role that was so fulfilling but didn’t fully satisfy my creative instincts. When my husband’s new job opportunity took us to Tennessee and we moved, it felt like the right moment to embrace a new chapter. I took a leap of faith, leaving behind the security of teaching to pursue my passion for creating micro-macramé jewelry.

With unwavering support from my husband, I took on Mrs. K’s Kreations full time, where I craft unique necklaces and bracelets inspired by natural stones and the world around me. Each piece is designed with the intention of bringing joy and meaning to the wearer. This journey has reaffirmed my belief in the power of pursuing one’s passions, and I am immensely proud of how far I’ve come, crafting pieces that not only adorn but also uplift and inspire.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey of transforming a passion for micro-macramé into a career has certainly been filled with joys as well as challenges. One of the significant hurdles has been navigating the business side of my venture. Although I can craft intricate micro-macrame pieces, the complexities of running a small business often overwhelm me. Recognizing this, I’ve taken proactive steps by enrolling in business classes and seeking help from friends. The willingness of others to assist has been encouraging and has helped me manage this aspect of my journey more effectively.

Establishing a routine has also posed a challenge. The transition from a structured teaching schedule to a more flexible lifestyle required adjustment. Finding a daily routine that accommodates my passion for micro-macramé while balancing personal aspirations and business goals has been an ongoing effort. Utilizing tools like to-do lists and planning my ideal day are steps I’ve taken to ensure I remain organized and focused.
In sharing these struggles and strategies, I hope to inspire others to embrace their own challenges along the way. Acknowledging the bumps in the road can lead to valuable lessons and ultimately pave the way for personal growth and success.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Hello, I’m Brooke Kitzhaber, a passionate micro-macramé artist nestled in the charming landscapes of East Tennessee. Each piece I create is a labor of love, intricately designed to capture the essence of nature’s beauty. My work primarily features natural stones, lovingly intertwined with polyester string, creating a unique harmony of materials. The magic of macramé lies in its simplicity—an art rooted in the technique of knotting. My designs forgo the use of wire or glue, relying solely on the strength and artistry of knots to cradle and highlight each stone’s individual character.

Nature serves as my muse, inspiring me to weave enchanting and natural elements into my designs. This approach also aims to connect the wearer to the serene beauty of the natural world. My creations are more than just accessories; they are stories waiting to be told. Each piece is unique, crafted to celebrate the individuality of the stones I use. To enhance this storytelling aspect, I write a short story to accompany each creation, adding depth and meaning to the jewelry.

It’s a joy to see my work resonate with others, especially when a piece finds its perfect owner at a market. My motto, “Carefully tying nature-inspired jewelry pieces to bring joy to your world,” reflects my dedication to creating meaningful connections through my art. In pursuit of this goal, I’ve recently launched a weekly blog titled “Knot by Knot,” available on my website. This blog is a space where I share the inspirations and stories behind my micro-macramé creations. As an art enthusiast myself, I understand the joy of knowing an artist’s story and the background of their work. By sharing my journey and insights, I hope to foster a deeper connection between my creations and their admirers.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Don’t let imposter syndrome get you down, try to learn to stand up for yourself. You are an expert in your craft, believe it. One market really stands out in my mind as a time I had to learn from failure. I applied and got accepted to a local market and quickly paid the market fee. Unfortunately, in the paperwork, my name got forgotten off the list and come market week, when I reached out for more details, I was told I did not pay so I did not have a spot. After some communicating we figured out that I did get accepted and did pay, but my spot was lost in the paperwork. Instead of standing up for myself I took a refund and was so disappointed. This was the largest market I had gotten accepted to at that time and I worked to prepare for it for months. I remember being disappointed, but let the experience teach me to stand up for myself.

Surround yourself with mentors and peers who can offer guidance and support. Attend workshops, mixers, and other events to connect with fellow creators. Don’t hesitate to ask questions; the knowledge and experiences of others can be invaluable. When I first started, I wish I had understood the importance of building a community and seeking help. It’s crucial to remember that you’re not alone on this journey, and many people are willing to support and guide you. By embracing these principles, you can confidently pursue your creative path and grow as both an artist and entrepreneur. I have been blow away by the opportunities and support for local creatives in my area. Don’t be afraid to reach out and connect, you will be shock at the help people are willing to give.

Lastly, try to create a balanced schedule. I mention this earlier as something I am still struggling with and learning to do. While it’s easy to get lost in the joy of creating, it’s important to maintain a balanced lifestyle. Incorporate other goals, such as exercise, meal preparation, and social activities, into your routine to stay organized and avoid burnout. I am still currently trying to hone my daily schedule. I have almost gotten my daily work schedule worked out. However, something I think I need to do is stop bringing macrame outside of “business hours.” I want to focus on my family when the work day is done, I think creating this space will keep the passion alive.
