Today we’d like to introduce you to Janiece Stevens
Hi Janiece, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Janiece Stevens, but you might know me as Jani Draws. I’m an artist who was born and raised right here in Knoxville, TN, and various parts of East Tennessee.
From the moment I could hold a pencil or marker, I’ve been drawing and creating. Art became my voice, allowing me to express feelings that words couldn’t. I knew from a very young age that artwork was my passion. As I grew up, I dedicated myself to learning more about it through school, books, media and online tutorials.
In 2016, I was given my first drawing tablet where I was introduced to the world of digital artwork. I taught myself how to use programs like Photoshop, Pixlr, and Clip Studio Paint, experimenting with different styles and techniques until I found a unique approach that worked best for me.
To further my artistic journey, I enrolled at Watkins College of Art in Nashville, TN, focusing on graphic design. During my time at Watkins, I learned a lot of new ways to approach artwork including from a business stand point. However, I soon realized that graphic design wasn’t my true calling.
After returning to my hometown, I balanced my art as a hobby while working at Radio Systems Corporation. There were times when it was tough to manage both, which led me to take a break from creating. But when the pandemic hit and I began working from home, I found new motivation to dive back into my art and expressing myself creatively. As I grew as an artist, I decided to rebrand my business and started selling my work at local events once Covid restrictions eased. That was the moment I knew it was time to take my art seriously and embrace my path as a freelance artist and full-time business owner. I said my goodbyes to my work family and started my new journey.
As of 2025, I’ve proudly been a full-time business owner and freelance artist for two years!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My art journey has not been the easiest. During my time in the corporate world, I experienced a significant art block that lasted nearly three years. It was tough to deal with, as I felt a deep disconnect from my creative self—something I never imagined could happen since art is such an integral part of who I am. Once I broke through that block, I discovered that my artwork had improved and my creativity felt limitless.
However, starting my small business selling prints, keychains, lanyards, books, stickers, and more brought its own challenges. Now, I wear many hats: I’m my own boss, marketer, social media manager, event planner, content creator, and I handle all my shipping and logistics.
In this line of work, sales and income can be quite unpredictable. There are times when business slows down or events are few and far between. Yet, I’ve learned to use those quieter moments to set new goals and concentrate on my commission work. It’s a balancing act I’m still figuring out, but the stress is worth it because I genuinely love what I do with my art and business!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m primarily recognized for my digital artwork, but I truly enjoy exploring all forms of art across various mediums. At the moment, I create my digital pieces using an iPad Pro and the Procreate app. This setup gives me the freedom to work in different places, whether it’s a cozy café, a library, or even snuggled up in bed with my pets.
One of my greatest inspirations is Yumei Art, whose work continues to motivate me. I was drawn to her vibrant use of color and the meaningful messages embedded in her pieces. She played a significant role in my decision to pursue digital art. Not only that, but her commitment to environmental issues resonates with me deeply – especially since I am from the Appalachian Mountains and share her passion for preserving nature.
My proudest achievement has been my ability to support myself through the art and products I’ve created. There were moments of doubt when I questioned if I was making the right choice or feared facing art block again while pursuing this as a full-time career. However, I take pride in surpassing my own expectations and achieving nearly all of my career and artistic goals over the past two years.
What matters most to you? Why?
My partner matters most to me and is the most important person in my life. They have been my greatest source of support, lifting me up during my toughest times and celebrating my successes with me. They’ve witnessed every phase of my artistic journey and have played a crucial role in helping me pursue my dreams. I truly believe that I wouldn’t be where I am today without their presence and love.
