Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Brooks
Hi Stephanie , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a camera, whether it was a disposable or a Polaroid. When my kids were little is when I really started taking off with pictures though, and it just grew over the years as I learned more and perfected my skills. I still have a lot of learning to do, this business is constantly growing in so many ways! In 2016, I was doing photography full time when I suddenly lost my dad. This caused me to go into a deep depression and I just stopped taking photos. I was having a lot of health issues as well. Two years later, I lost another family member and was having a hard time finding joy again. Losing those two loved ones though, made me realize how important photography actually is. That’s when I picked my camera back up and started taking photos again.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not! This is a tough industry to be in today. Everyone’s got a camera now and it is always in their hand! Not just that but we’re in a digital world so physical portraits such as prints and albums are less popular than they used to be. Everyone wants digitals, and I’m trying to show people the importance of printing your photographs!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I do my best to offer my clients an experience. I want them to want to come back to me year after year and tell others about me. I wouldn’t say I specialize in one particular area because I photograph a wide variety of people, but families are my most common. Families, couples, high school seniors, maternity, boudoir and children. I would love to photograph more maternity, I absolutely adore momma’s-to-be, they’re beautiful! I guess what makes me stand out more is that I don’t follow the norm and I offer physical photographs, not just digitals. I offer prints, canvas, metal, albums and more and my clients love it! I offer more than just a picture to my clients. I give them an experience and we become friends along the way!
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Never stop learning! Take workshops, listen to senior photographers. Don’t ever stop just because you think you can’t do this or that, learn it! This is an ever growing industry, there’s always something to be learned.
