McLain’s Painting began in 1999, born from a simple yet powerful realization: Knoxville was in desperate need of a painting company that truly prioritized customer service. I founded the company with a clear mission—to ensure every customer felt heard and valued, delivering not just quality painting but an exceptional service experience.
From the very start, our focus has been on putting the customer first. We understood that giving the best service is everything, and our approach was simple: listen, understand, and deliver results that exceed expectations.
As the business grew, we realized that the cornerstone of outstanding customer service lies in our team. Over the years, we’ve dedicated ourselves to hiring the best people, investing in their growth, and creating processes that set us apart. From meticulous planning to flawless execution, every step is designed to ensure our clients are not just satisfied but genuinely delighted with the results.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Over the last 25 years, McLain’s Painting has seen incredible growth, built lasting relationships, and delivered countless beautiful transformations for our clients. But like any journey, ours has not been without its struggles.
One of the hardest challenges we’ve faced has been watching great employees, the heart of our company, come and go. While every departure leaves a mark, the most painful moments have been losing team members far too soon in life. These losses remind us of the fragility of life and the profound impact one person can have on a business, a team, and a community.
Joe was one of those rare individuals who came to McLain’s Painting and immediately made an indelible impact. His vibrant attitude, unwavering faith in Christ, and passion for serving others embodied everything we stand for as a company. Joe showed up to work every day with enthusiasm, inspiring those around him with his positive energy and commitment to living out our core values.
Tragically, in June 2022, Joe’s life was cut short by a brain hemorrhage. The news shook our team to its core. Losing such a vibrant soul was devastating, but Joe’s legacy lives on in our work and in the way we approach every day. His passion for excellence, faith, and service inspires us to persevere, even in the face of challenges.
The loss of valued team members like Joe has been a reminder of how precious and meaningful our time together is. These moments have taught us resilience and the importance of holding on to the values that bring us together as a company. Through it all, we continue to honor their memory by striving to be better every day, ensuring that their spirit lives on in the work we do and the lives we touch.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Starting and growing a business in the trades is an incredible journey—challenging, rewarding, and full of lessons along the way. If I could share one piece of advice with anyone just beginning this path, it would be to trust in God’s plan and seek His wisdom every step of the way. My faith has been the foundation of McLain’s Painting, and I believe wholeheartedly in Proverbs 16:9: “In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Allowing God to use your business for His purpose will bring clarity and guidance, even in the toughest times.
Persistence is another essential ingredient for success. There will be good days, but there will also be many hard days when quitting might feel like the easier option. My advice? Stay the course. Push through the challenges, learn from them, and keep your eyes on the bigger picture. Over time, that persistence will pay off in ways you can’t imagine.
Lastly, treat people the way you want to be treated and always do the right thing. This simple principle goes a long way, whether it’s with your customers, employees, or partners. Integrity builds trust, and trust is the foundation of any lasting success.
