Meet Amy Moore of Tate Insurance Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Moore

Hi Amy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Not sure where to start or how much you would like to know so feel free to leave out what you feel is relevant.
I lived in a very remote part of WV until I was 15 with my twin, stepfather, mother and 2 other siblings. We would live in one place until we were evicted which happened a lot. We were enrolled in 23 different schools before 9th grade. My step father unfortunately had “eyes” for me and couldn’t keep his hands to himself. My mother didn’t believe me so I decided to run away. On a cold winter night I left our home which had no electricity, water or bathroom (when I say remote, we were remote-very poor). There was a single lady at what we call the mouth of the holler that was out smoking a cigarette and yelled at me as I was walking (not sure where I thought I was going). She knew about my step dad and insisted that I come stay with her. She kept me hidden for 10-12 days until she could find a way for me to get to my grandmothers house in Logan, WV. My grandmother called one of my mothers sisters (they call her Quennie) to come get me and take me to Oak Ridge, TN where my father was residing. Long story short, my twin brother Brian and I were enrolled in the OR school system and due to us moving so much we didn’t test well (tested 3rd grade level for everything). By the grace of God we graduated in 1990 but in 1991 my twin was killed by a drunk driver. Needless to say I hit rock bottom and wanted to end my own life. Due to my twin being on a motorcycle, State Farm didn’t do anything to try and help my dad with the claim because they said he was 25% at fault just because he was on a mc. The lady that killed him just pulled out of a liquor store, had no lights on and had passed out in the middle of the road. Brian was heading to his girlfriends house and didn’t see the car parked in the middle of the road and hit it (died at the scene). The more I thought about how my dad was treated the more angry I became. One day at the end of a long welding shift I said there has to be something I can do to help people that experience situations like what happened to my dad. Travelers had posted a sales job, I applied and they hired me and I excelled. After about 10yrs of being their top sales agent I decided I wanted to learn more so took a pay cut and started working for William Blount as a personal lines CSR. After 5 yrs there I was offered another position with a bigger agency and jumped on the opportunity. Now I am a partner at Tate Insurance Group and boy did I have to work hard to get to where I am but I give all thanks to our Heavenly Father who saw me through. My goal is to help as many people as I can and it’s not about making commission to me, it’s about helping people protect their assets.
This is the gist of my story

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a woman in the insurance industry is challenging especially in the commercial world. Men tend to be the leaders when it comes to commercial insurance but I am giving them a run for their money.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Scott Tate started Tate Insurance Group in 2008, he hired me as a producer/manager in 2012 and was made partner in 2019. I specialize in auto, home, umbrella, boat, motorcycles, work comp, general liability, commercial auto and life insurance. We have grown our agency to over $35million and are continuing to grow. A lot of local agencies have sold out to larger companies that are mostly ran remote now. We have no plans to sell but do plan to open a couple more agencies around the area because we believe that staying local is important.
As for companies we represent, it is hard to list them all but our biggest carrier is Erie Insurance. Erie is one of the best companies I have ever had the privilege of writing for. They offer so many coverages that others don’t and are easy to work with which says a lot. I think the one thing that sets me aside from other agents is that I am always working which can be annoying to my husband but he also understands how important it is for me to make sure people get the help they need.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My reverend grand pa baptized my twin and I in a very cold river in WV, he allowed us to hold hands while doing so. Best memory ever!
