Daily Inspiration: Meet Nolan Gray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nolan Gray

Hi Nolan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a small town in West Virginia, spending my childhood playing music and exploring the outdoors. I started piano at age 4, but by the time I turned 10, I just wanted to play guitar and rock out – enough of all this classical music, I thought. Ironically, I ended up studying classical guitar in college, which I loved. However, I eventually moved to Knoxville, TN, to study jazz guitar at The University of Tennessee.

Growing up, I had a small “studio” in my parents’ basement where I got some cheap equipment, learned to record, work a soundboard, and eventually delve into Pro Tools and other music software as well. I’m a creative through and through, with a passion for creating music. Most days, you’ll find me either recording or mixing something.

I started offering my services professionally in 2020 when I shifted from the TV production world to audio engineering at my studio, Indigo Sound. While I’ve been writing and recording music for decades, I’ve only recently started to release my tunes. For a long time, I was very hard on myself and really didn’t think I had a place in this world, to put it lightly. But through my journey I’ve become more aware of the gifts I do have and have found a place to where I’m more carefree and fun in my art and in how I can express and share it.

Electric Father is my musical alter ego and passion project. Everything I create under this moniker is experimental, a little wild, and really just fun to me. This is a very DIY project, whether it’s writing, recording, or mixing – I absolutely love it all and am truly obsessed. I also take part in several other music projects with people I love. My friend Rory and I have an electronic project called The Natalie Effect, and I play guitar in a couple of bands that I have helped mix music for like Kid Cherry & The Graduates. You can find all of these projects on Spotify. I’m currently working on new music for Electric Father and am about to release a new single very soon.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can’t necessarily say that life has been smooth or easy. I have learned a lot in recent years as I began to see ways in which I was harming myself and began to love myself better. I’ve been learning how important it is to put yourself first in a healthy way and to live your own life, not the life someone else expects you to live. My dream is to help other people discover that too, and much of the energy behind my music comes from that place.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a musician and audio engineer with a passion for music, creativity, and people. My work encompasses a range of roles within the music industry, where I specialize in playing guitar and keys, as well as creating and engineering songs.

I’m most proud of the albums I’ve produced and the projects I’ve been a part of, including my solo music project, Electric Father. Running Indigo Sound, my studio, has been incredibly fulfilling. I offer mixing, mastering, and podcasting services. You can check out my website at indigosound.studio.

What sets me apart is my passion for helping people reach their potential, whether in art or in life.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that most people might not know is that I am a trained classical pianist. Most people that know me know that I love playing guitar as well as doing the whole audio engineering thing, but my background in piano has greatly influenced my approach to music composition and production. It’s a lesser-known aspect of my musical journey that has had a significant impact on my creative process.

Outside of music, I have a few hidden talents that might surprise people. For example, I’m an avid chef and love experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen. Cooking is a creative outlet for me, much like music, and I find it incredibly rewarding.
