Jennifer Bruce

Hi Jennifer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I first started Grizzly Bear Baking Company as a hobby and creative outlet after I had my first daughter. I have always been crafty, and I love baking. I saw a photo on Pinterest that inspired me to try it, and it was not a total failure! I continued to practice and perfect my recipe. My husband was the ultimate taste tester and would give me honest feedback until I finally had a recipe I was proud to distribute! My first order was from a close family friend who ordered some for her event, and from there, my cookies were spread strictly by word of mouth! I owe much of my success to my husband, whose patience, helping hand, and business knowledge helped me grow.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I started my business out of my home as a licensed cottage baker. The biggest struggle was when my business grew, so did my need for storage, cookie cutters, ingredients, etc! For a while, my formal dining room was turned into a ‘cookie room,’ and my kitchen always had flour that seemed everywhere. I had a Hobart mixer in my home, which was bizarre now that I reflect. When I moved into my commercial kitchen in late 2021, I felt I could finally have my house back and separate work from home life!

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in decorated cookies. They are sugar cookies with primarily royal icing. My most proud moments are meeting clients’ expectations and bringing their visions to life. Taste and quality are something I take pride in!

What’s next?
Looking ahead, I envision my business evolving into a walk-in bakery, a place where customers can savor our creations and perhaps enjoy a cup of coffee. However, for now, my role as a mother to two active daughters, deeply involved in dance and sports, takes precedence. I’m content with the progress of my business and trust that the future holds exciting opportunities.
