Life & Work with Charles Finley of Maryville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Finley.

Charles Finley

Hi Charles, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always drawn people, but never watercolor or architecture. In 2019, while laid off, I started teaching myself to paint watercolor home portraits. In December 2020, I left an 18-year restaurant management career to pursue art full-time.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I jumped in, thinking the momentum would be like a rocket to the moon. While I’ve succeeded, it’s been a slow but steady climb. If you want to make it, you must be very persistent and get your work out there. The more your work is seen, the more momentum you’ll find. There is an audience for almost anything and any style, so keep producing no matter what.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a watercolorist specializing in home portraits, urban architecture, and pets. Farms are my favorite subjects.

What are your plans for the future?
The incredible response to my Mainstreet Series has been an enormous blessing. I’m working on my third series and look forward to continuing to build that portfolio.
