Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaun Abbott.
Hi Shaun, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
Since graduating high school in 2012, I’ve taken music more seriously. It started with “Amarillo by Morning” by The King of country music, George Strait. When I heard that song, I knew right then and there that I wanted to sing and play it for the rest of my life. As of 2020, I’ve been doing it for a living. Playing 6-7 days a week/ 2 shows a day sometimes. Over the past few years, I’ve been able to open up for artists such as Jeff Cook (From the band Alabama), Kristian Bush (from the band Sugarland), Eli Young Band, Jerrod Niemann, Josh Thompson, LANco, John Michael Montgomery, Tracy Lawrence, and Travis Tritt. To this day, it still feels like a dream. But I thank my Lord, Jesus Christ, for giving me the strength to provide for my family.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s not always been easy. I’ve always worked side jobs and gigs to make ends meet. I’ve been playing shows weekly (not full-time) from 2014-2020. When the world shut down, I lost all of my shows. I also had gave up music for a while in 2020. I didn’t want anything to do with a guitar and almost sold them all off. I also dealt with anxiety and depression, and it worsened as 2020 went by. Around the end of 2020 into 2021, the gigs started coming to me like crazy. So I thought of my family before myself, picked up that guitar, and returned to business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a country singer/songwriter from Knoxville, TN. “If You Change Your Mind” is my most popular song. I listen to many independent artists and then cover their music at shows. Lots of Texas stuff! But in my sets, I play country music, or what I consider country music. Real, raw, and honest. I’m most proud that I get to do this for a living and provide for my family.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Everyone has their definition of “making it.” I used to think it was shining lights and people knowing my name worldwide. But the older I get, I realize I’ve already made it. I get to play shows, be there for my wife and 2 beautiful kids and play songs I wrote at shows that people sing back to me. It wouldn’t hurt to have a few things and a new guitar paid off.
