Today we’d like to introduce you to Faith Mae Jones Hemmler.
Hi Faith Mae, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I never really thought I would dive into the beauty industry when I was younger. When I graduated high school in 2020, I thought I would become a lawyer and was in a Pre-Law major through the University of Arizona’s online program. Then the pandemic fully hit, and I realized traditional education was not for me then. I spent about a year without education, just working as a phone receptionist and trying to figure myself out. I realized I was looking for a career that others would see as successful but not what I wanted to do. I finally started looking into what I used to enjoy when I was younger and thought about my love of skincare and makeup. I had always struggled with cystic and hormonal acne and loved special effects makeup when I was in middle school. I still didn’t know what that kind of work would be called, and I couldn’t find it anywhere online. Then I was scrolling through my TikTok feed and saw a video titled “day in the life of an esthetician.” I was immediately intrigued and spent the rest of the day scrolling through the hashtags in her caption and page. I had finally found what I wanted to do and looked for schools near me that offered it. I chose the Tennessee School of Beauty, and roughly 7 months later, I graduated! The following month I took my state boards and was officially a licensed esthetician.
When I graduated in July of 2022, the market was scarce, and it was tough to find a salon to work with, let alone one I felt would be right for me. I worked at Ulta for a while, allowing me to offer my skin knowledge and learn more about what was out on the market. One night I got a random spark of energy to see if there was any way I could open my salon, and I reached out to Elite Suites Salon Studios. I didn’t expect to get any response, but that night my now lovely landlord messaged me, saying she had a space open if I wanted to see it. It took a lot of internal back and forth and a final push from my family to go for it. I signed my lease the day I toured the space, and Erosthetics was born! It was something I had never expected to happen so soon, but I am so grateful every day that it did.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a rollercoaster. We’re living in a time that makes it difficult for people to treat themselves, so business has been a slow start. Every day is getting easier, though, and I try to make my services as accessible as possible for my clients by always having some deal or promotion. There are also many behind-the-scenes, technical, and legal things that no one warns you about when you start. It’s taught me to be more patient with myself, and I’ve learned a lot of great skills in the process as well.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Erosthetics?
I offer a wide range of services, including facials, waxing, and lash extensions, but my specialty is waxing. I adore waxing, so I have no complaints about that. What sets me apart is that I am different from your traditional esthetician. My tagline for Erosthetics is “create beauty in chaos” because I don’t believe we should limit services to just one set way. It’s why I offer things like red and blue eyebrow tinting and will add in colored lash extensions eventually. I want everyone to know they can be authentic in their beauty and don’t have to follow any trends or standards other than what makes them happy. I want readers to know that when you come to Erosthetics, it is a safe place for you to be yourself, and all I care about is making you happy when you leave my studio.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is from when I was in elementary school. My oldest niece and I went to the same school, so every morning, we would hop in the car, and my dad would act like a pilot giving a little take-off speech, and then we’d listen to whatever radio was on while we rode to school. Since we lived in California at the time, it was usually some old-school mariachi, and the sun would just be coming up over the desert. It always made for beautiful mornings,
