Exploring Life & Business with Camryn Brashear of Black Elk Woodcraft

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camryn Brashear.

Hi Camryn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Black Elk Woodcraft is a creation by Newbegin Enterprises Inc (NEI), a successful US Department of Defense contractor since the early 90s. A few years ago, NEI relocated to a larger facility in Piney Flats. With the extra space, we began exploring new business ventures, thus the creation of Highland Fleet Solutions, a fleet management business specializing in up-fitting, tire services, wheel alignment, and scheduled maintenance. Custom up-fitting for fleets eventually led to custom-made creations for the public — therefore, Black Elk Woodcraft was born.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Black Elk Woodcraft is a new business, so we encounter many challenges daily. We love solving problems, so as challenges arise, we adapt and learn more efficient ways of doing things. Though we have training on the CNC machine and have formal education in 3D modeling, we are entering a relatively newer market opportunity. Hence, many aspects are self-taught.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Black Elk Woodcraft?
We use an industry-standard 5 ft x 10 ft CNC Router, epoxy resin, and 3D modeling skills to create whatever our customers want. Right now, we mostly create custom signage but are venturing into other wooden creations like D&D Dice Towers, River Tables, customized furniture, sports memorabilia, and more! We want to give our customers the absolute best, so we aren’t afraid to start over if it means delivering the best product. If you work with us on a custom piece, you’ll receive several mockup designs, and you can adjust them to fit your vision however you want. Once you’re satisfied with the design, we’ll begin production as soon as possible.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Our favorite part about Knoxville is that it’s far enough away from home to feel like a getaway but close enough to where it’s easy to visit. We always leave excited and inspired by the culture and art in the area. And there’s always so much to do and explore, so we’re never bored.

Our least favorite parts about Knoxville are the confusing and slightly chaotic traffic patterns and exits.
