Rising Stars: Meet Jojo Wan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jojo Wan.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was in Service Support for a long time, but I got tired of the cubicle life and wanted a change in my life.

How I decided to become a massage therapist can only be described as a sign that led me to the profession. The moment I started practicing professionally, I fell in love and am passionate about bodywork and healing arts. I realized touch therapy is a powerful tool.

How did it get me where I am today? I would say the reward part of it is that my clients feel better with less pain and are able to stay active. That provided me with the strength to move forward.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it was not smooth. I ran into multiple situations.

First, it was the location. Second, it was the license due to the miscommunication with my accounting firm which didn’t realize that there is a difference between a business license and an establishment license. By the time I realized it, it was almost a year and I got fined and then Covid happened.

Even now the profession continues to recover from the effects of inflation.
Unfortunately, many clients view massage as an enjoyable indulgence and do not include it as a regular budget item.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an independent massage therapist operating my own studio. Beginning my career, I was interested in pain management and therapeutic massage therapy.

My approach is comprehensive combining different modalities during therapy sessions. Especially, trigger points help me identify the pain pattern and issues. I am also interested in Eastern holistic healing like cupping therapy and Thai massage.

I have begun practicing CranioSacral therapy and I believe moving forward this will become my lifelong journey of learning and it’s deeply gratifying. This modality will set me apart from other therapies.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Nothing in this profession, as in life, is easy.

Everything is a lifelong journey of training and practice. With the ability to adapt, overcome, and persevere all will work out in the end. This is especially true in terms of a professional approach.
