Exploring Life & Business with Rachel Johnson of Rachel Johnson Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Johnson.

Hi Rachel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hey there! My name is Rachel Johnson, and I come from the mountains of East Tennessee. (You can definitely hear it in my accent!) I have always enjoyed taking photos, and I strongly believe in preserving memories. Capturing snapshots of life has always been my little escape to reminisce on some of my favorite memories.

What began as just taking portraits of friends in school, prospered into capturing sweet moments of individuals and their families. Although, I originally started this small business of mine in Japan. During that time, I had recently moved with my military husband and wanted to provide extra income for our home.

Not to mention, we had our first baby girl there. Therefore, this became a great hobby to take up for the grandparents’ sake who was thousands of miles away. From there, it slowly blossomed into what it is today. My love for photography and meeting others grew tremendously within those 3 years of being stationed overseas.

Now, we live in Florida where I get to meet so many wonderful people while they’re vacationing in the area. However, my favorite shoots will always come from good ole Rocky Top! I’m tremendously blessed to have the opportunity to help others capture their memories with some of their favorite people.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Operating a small business always comes with its own difficulties.

Nothing could prepare me for the challenging road that came along with the pandemic. Although, one advantage that I have to be a natural light photographer is that all of my sessions are hosted outside where we can maintain adequate distance from one another. On the other hand, having to maneuver through lockdowns, public parks closures, and mask mandates definitely made operations more challenging.

Regardless of the situation, I tried to make the best of the situation that was at hand. Therefore, I spent a lot of the extra time that I had furthering my education in the marketing and advertising aspect of my business. An example is revising the strategies with which I was interacting with potential clients on social media networks. Another was altering the process in which clients could contact me to inquire about a session.

Lastly, my main goal was to really personalize and sanctify my brand.

However, I was inspired by the photography community to come together and find innovative ways to create during these testing times. Despite significant hardships, I have tried to rise above these challenges to create work that pushed my professional and personal goals to new heights.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a professional portrait photographer whose goal is to capture memories that you can cherish for a lifetime. My services include Couples, Family, Seniors, Maternity, Fresh 48, Lifestyle, and Milestone sessions. However, I specialize in family photography.

I LOVE the uniqueness of each and every family. Each family member has a unique personality and perspective, and I love the family dynamics when everyone gets together to have a good time. My favorite family photos always end up being the ones from really great days we spent together. Posed shots will never go out of style, but I enjoy the candid shots the most. Each moment we spend with our family is precious.

Families deserve to have some of those moments captured. As a family portrait photographer, it is my privilege to help you hold onto those shared moments.

When booking with me, I hope that my clients choose me for my passion, skill, and love for others. Photography is not just a job for me. I don’t do it because I need to. I’m a photographer because I love the art of it, and I love the challenge of composing and creating beautiful images of my clients.

I thoroughly enjoy getting to meet with fantastic individuals and fall in love with their loved ones throughout our time together. I get to express my creativity while running my own business and turning amazing clients into even better friends.
