Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonio McKinley.
Hi Tonio, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since a child, I’ve always dreamed of being a business owner, but I couldn’t quite place a finger on the desired industry. However, as time passed I realized that there wasn’t a specific industry that I was more interested in versus another, it was more so the love for the fundamental purpose behind businesses and what moves them.
Being originally from Memphis, TN, I gained insight on investing from a young age, however, most people of color didn’t know how to gain leverage or footing into that world of business. So I made it a mission of mine to gain more insight so that either my learning of the skill set or the passing of the knowledge could assist those around me.
It started with a $200 investment that turned into a $1300 investment, and from there my wheels consistently turned & so did my ambition towards building a business model around it. With that being said, I decided to learn how to trade commodities, stock options, and even leverage debt. By doing so, it gave me further clarity on what it would take to exponentially change people’s financial situations through risk mitigated investments.
This is where Incisive Investments began. We were founded in Arlington, TN then chartered in Coppell, TX & Knoxville, TN, all in which we have strong communal ties. We are in the process of doing a $1.75M capital raise to tie into the plan of expansion and further community growth. By doing this, it will allow both my vision and the supporters around me to visually see and reap the benefits of its fruition.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The largest struggles that I have encountered have been the following:
1.) Lack of support from those you expect the most from.
2.) Initial raise of capital.
3.) Sacrifice, as all entrepreneurs encounter.
4.) Competing against firms with a longer track record, history, and investor relationships.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I, Tonio McKinley, am a contributor to the Forbes brand as a Culture Forum Contributor, and prior to my transition into finance, I was heavily involved in corporate retail on the planning, sourcing, and product development sides of the business.
Furthermore, I am an extreme knowledge enthusiast. Whomever or whatever experience I can learn from, I’ll sacrifice time to sit down and learn it. I’m a firm believer in learning from all people, even those in circumstances deemed negative by society. Having this approach will take you significantly farther as a business owner.
