Meet Rick Laney of Rick Laney Marketing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Laney.

Hi Rick, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
“I spent the first 20 years of my career in senior-level positions with two Chicago-based holding companies. Part of my responsibilities included managing the large marketing firms, advertising agencies, and PR firms that we hired,” Rick Laney explained.

“Anyone who has worked with advertising agencies and marketing firms knows how frustrating and expensive most of them are. They were always over budget, typically late with deliverables, and rarely provided what we were paying them for. This was the real motivation behind the formation of Rick Laney Marketing in 2012. We wanted to create the kind of agency that was built around serving clients and meeting their needs – the kind I spent 20 years looking for and never found”

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
“Starting a new business is never an easy process, and ours had many challenges,” Laney said. “Because of my background, we had clients from the very beginning, although most of them were not in East Tennessee. Word spread quickly and within a few years our client mix had leveled out significantly with nearly an even mix of instate clients and clients across the country.

“I was also extremely fortunate to find a talented Creative Director named Denver Stevens shortly after we started who has been a trusted partner and friend for nearly 14 years. Finding the right people is always a challenge, but we now have a talented team of copywriters, social media specialists, web developers, photographers/videographers, and PR people who our clients depend on and value.”

We’ve been impressed with Rick Laney Marketing, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We help companies and brands identify who they want to sell to and then motivate those people to buy. That is marketing.

There are a million ways Rick Laney Marketing does that, including market research and strategy development, adverting (digital and traditional), public and media relations, branding, web development, and creative design for everything from brochures to direct marketing campaigns to trade show booths and product packaging. We are truly a full-service marketing firm and – for many of our clients – we serve as their in-house marketing department that isn’t actually in-house.

Our top priority is to form a strong partnership with the companies and organizations we work with. We are invested in their success and, at the end of the day, if we aren’t helping them increase market share, sales, and revenue, the partnership isn’t working.
