Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Kirkland Gass.
Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been in the beauty industry for almost two decades now, and honestly, I can’t imagine doing anything else. Hair has been my thing since the very beginning- it’s the only career I ever dreamed of, and I feel lucky every day that I get to live it out. There’s something so special about helping people feel beautiful, confident, and a little more like themselves.
I’m 35 now, and life looks a little different than when I started out. I’ve got three amazing daughters- Kirra (14), Emerie (12), and Thea (6)- who keep me on my toes and remind me why building something bigger than myself matters. About eight years ago, I started dreaming up a different kind of salon space, one that felt like more than just a salon. I wanted it to be a collective- a place where stylists, beauty pros, and clients all felt at home, supported, and inspired.
What started as a little spark of an idea has grown into what you see today: a hybrid salon and boutique where beauty, creativity, and community come together. It’s been a journey with plenty of twists, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
“Smooth road” isn’t really in my vocabulary. This dream has been built in between raising three kids, managing financial curveballs, dealing with contractors, navigating city permits, and still showing up every day for my clients. There have been delays, unexpected costs, and moments where I questioned my sanity- but every obstacle has made me scrappier, more resourceful, and even more determined to make this space exactly what I envisioned.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Long Story Collective, we’re more than just a salon- we’re a full beauty and lifestyle destination. Our space brings together talented hairstylists, estheticians, massage therapists, permanent makeup artists, and even a boutique, all under one roof. Whatever your beauty or self-care needs are, we’ve got you covered.
Personally, one of my greatest passions is bringing hair back to life. My mission is simple: to deliver the color and style you’re dreaming of in a way that keeps your hair healthy and manageable. I believe no one should ever have to sacrifice the health of their hair for the sake of style.
I’ve been certified in extensions for over 15 years, specializing in K-tips and I-tips. Done correctly, extensions shouldn’t be damaging. In fact, my clients often tell me their hair grows healthier and stronger while wearing them. That’s something I take a lot of pride in- helping people not only love their look in the moment but also see long-term results!
What sets us apart is the balance between artistry and integrity. Whether it’s extensions, color, skincare, or boutique finds, we focus on quality, personalization, and creating an uplifting experience. At Long Story Collective, it’s not just about looking good- it’s about feeling good, too.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about our city is the sense of community. Being a hairstylist in a smaller town means I get to build real, lasting relationships with my clients- many of them feel more like family than customers. I also love that people here are supportive of small businesses and genuinely want to see each other succeed.
As for dislikes- I’ll be honest, I don’t really have any. Small-town life has its quirks, but for me, that’s part of the charm. Being a hairstylist here is more than a career- it’s being a part of the heartbeat of the community.
And let’s be real… in a small town, your hairstylist knows more secrets than anyone. 😉
