Hidden Gems: Meet Crystal Williams of Smart Money Financial Coaching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Williams.

Hi Crystal, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have loved personal finance since I was a teenager. When I was in my early twenties, I wanted to help people with managing their day-to-day finances, but I could not determine the best way to serve people in that capacity. I entered the legal field where I worked as a paralegal for over 20 years.

In 2018, the desire to help people with their finances peaked again. Everywhere I went I heard people talking negatively about money and their finances. I could not tune it out! I tried! Having worked on my own family’s finances and seeing the impact that changing our finances had on our life, I knew I could help others with their finances.

I opened Smart Money Financial Coaching as a side hustle in January 2019. During the day, I worked at the law firm and I coached in the evenings. I had a great job and never planned to leave, but the longer I coached people, the more unsettled I became working at the law firm. By the end of 2019, it became clear to me that it was time to transition to coaching full-time. I left the law firm at the end of 2019 and began focusing on growing Smart Money Financial Coaching.

As the world began to shut down, I focused on growing my business and helping people maneuver the changes they were facing. Many clients lost jobs, transitioned to working from home, lost loved ones, worked overtime, etc. I helped them minimize the financial impact of these changes.

Since Smart Money Financial Coaching opened in 2019, I have worked with numerous families to help them learn how to manage their income, eliminate debt, save, and maneuver life changes.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road. My biggest struggle/obstacle is people are not familiar with financial coaching. They are not aware of what I do or the impact that financial coaching can have on their life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Smart Money Financial Coaching exists to empower people with their finances. Managing your day-to-day finances does not have to be stressful.

Unlike a financial advisor, who sells insurance and investments, I specialize in teaching people how to manage their income. I help people break the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle. I teach people how to manage their money in a way that allows them to save, pay off debt, and do the things they love in life.

I hear the same statements from prospective clients over and over again.

“We earn good money, but I don’t know where it goes!”

“I got a raise, but I don’t know where it went!”

“We make too much money to be broke!”

I want these people to know help is available!

For the people who feel like they have tried everything to change their finances (read all the books, listened to all the podcasts, done the same Google searches over and over again), I want to encourage them to reach out for guidance. Clients tell me that within 45 days of starting coaching they feel less stressed about their finances.

I have several coaching options available including private one-on-one coaching, group coaching, and employee financial wellness programs. I also offer small business financial coaching.  I offer a complimentary consultation to help people decide if coaching is a good fit for them.

My goal is to help people be more intentional with their money so they can live a life they love free of financial stress.

What makes you happy?
Doing work that I love makes me happy. The work that I do doesn’t just impact the people right in front of me, it impacts generations. Spending time with my family also makes me happy. Time is our most valuable resource.
