Today we’d like to introduce you to Nakita Taylor.
Hi Nakita, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, I’m Nakita Taylor (licensed cosmetologist). Born and raised In Knoxville, TN, and a graduate of the University Of Tennessee.
Also, I have over 20 years of health care experience but I have always had a passion for the beauty and hair industry but never push myself to do so or shall I say make the first step towards pursuing a career in the beauty industry.
Along with other degrees that have been obtained over the years, I am proud to say that I have finally accomplished one of the things that I have always had on my bucket list and that was becoming a cosmetologist.
I was a nontraditional beauty school student. I was the oldest in my class and I worked at “HAIR FASHION EAST” a beauty salon located in East Knoxville, braiding hair and styling natural hair while in cosmetology school. I graduated from the college of applied Technology in November of 2021 and became a licensed cosmetologist in December 2022.
I am currently a stylist and teach braiding classes where my students obtain a braiding registration approved by the state of Tennessee upon completion. I plan to obtain my cosmetology instructor license within the next two years, therefore, I can go back into the local school system and teach Cosmetology (preferably in the black community).
I want to give back to my community and show these teens that the sky is the limit in the beauty business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth ride but what I can say is that hard work does pay off and staying consistent is the KEY!!!!
Building clientele and providing great customer service is the key to being an outstanding beautician.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in natural hair styling and braiding!!!
What set me apart from other stylists is that I have a psychology degree and that helps me with communicating (maintaining a nonjudgmental atmosphere) and maintaining and building relationships with my clients.
I love my JOB!!!
What do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is a satisfying experience for my clients. Your clients become friends and like family!
Just the fact that a good shampoo and style can make all the difference in a client’s mood and self-esteem makes me love being a cosmetologist even MORE!!!!
