Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Fitzpatrick.
Hi Christy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been drawing and painting ever since I could hold a crayon. I attribute my creativity to my mom and early teachers for encouraging me and supporting my passion. I refined my skills throughout school and college, where I explored mixed media and oil painting. I enjoy exploring various styles, ranging from realistic nature to surreal collages. Several years after college I realized I hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in a long time, so on New Year’s Eve of 2018 I vowed to pick it up again, and since then have made a point to improve my technique and execution. As of late I’ve enjoyed upcycling old jeans and incorporating “mini” acrylic paintings onto pockets. My mom and I have also started. a line of faith-inspired gym bracelets, which has been a meaningful collaboration. I’m of the belief that art can move us in powerful ways, and my goal has always been to make others feel happy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Because I work in a science field, I’ve not always had the time to consistently produce artwork. There was a time when I had a long break from painting due to travel and work, but on the cusp of 2018 I promised myself to never take a long break again! Ever since, I have been more intentional about how I spend my time, and have been able to consistently create. I think most creators can agree that life happens, which is a natural struggle – but through setting more goals and holding myself accountable, the road to creating has been less rocky.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work with mixed media. Ever since taking a mixed media course in college, I really appreciated seeing how we can transform other materials to create beautiful pieces. Although I still like painting traditional oil on canvas I also want to make art more accessible to people. When I started “mini” paintings on jeans I felt. a strong sense of gratification that others could wear art; not just be limited to hanging it on a wall. I also make jewelry, wood crafts, stuffed animals and just about anything that inspires me at the time. I enjoy having the ability to create with my hands, and various media allow me to do that.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
